🌟 What Is the Beckman Oral Motor Protocol? 🌟

The Beckman Oral Motor Protocol is a structured, evidence-informed approach used in pediatric occupational therapy to improve oral motor function—including tongue movement, lip control, and jaw stability.

👶 Why It Matters:
Children with feeding challenges, speech delays, or low oral muscle tone may struggle with essential tasks like eating, drinking, and speaking. These difficulties often stem from underdeveloped or uncoordinated oral motor skills.

👐 How It Works in OT:
Using hands-on techniques and specific tools, occupational therapists provide guided exercises that stimulate and strengthen the oral muscles. This helps children build the motor control needed for safe feeding and clear communication.

Whether your child is working on chewing, swallowing, or producing speech sounds, the Beckman Oral Motor Protocol offers a gentle, effective path toward progress.

I had to share this full story...because it is so amazing...THIS MOM IS AMAZING!!
My name is Lacie Robinson. I am writing this story about my 4 year old son Anthony Robinson. It all started when he was 6 months old. He started with skin problems. He had severe eczema where his skin would ooze with clear fluids, blisters all over his body and he would itch until his skin would bleed. I would call the Dr and he would prescribe a steroid that would give him relief for about a week then it was back to square one. We had to put socks on his hand so he wouldn't scratch his skin. We had to bathe him with clear water because even the gentlest of soap would hurt him. He would wake up up at 3 o'clock in the morning, screaming and hollering, and the only thing that would relieve his was a warm bath. Then one weekend for lunch I decided to feed him macaroni and cheese, baby food. I gave him three or four bites. He really didn't care for it too much but he ate it. About 20 minutes later he was laughing, playing and cutting up when all of a sudden his head goes back, his eyes rolled in the back of his head. He had marble size whelps around his neck, down his back and covered his arms. I screamed to my husband "He's not breathing" and he has bumps all over. We immediately started giving him Benadryl and trying to get him to swallow it. As my husband is doing that, I'm on the phone with 911. Now at this time we live 30-45 minutes away from the hospital, not to mention it took 911 that much time to get to our house. By the time they go to our house we were able to get him to start breathing again. The ambulance took him to the hospital. They gave him more medicine on the ride there. And the his diagnosis at the hospital was food allergies and to contact my pediatrician and get them to run some test. So the next day I called my pediatrician and I explained to them what happened. He ordered more blood test. So finally we get the results with allergies for rice, milk, eggs, corn, wheat, soy, nuts, oats peanuts. Pretty much everything a human body consumes. Almost everything you eat has at least one of these things in it. So I was like, ok, all he is eating is baby food so we will just stick with fruits and veggies and he is breastfed. We are then sent to an allergy Dr 2 hours away. While we were in the room all he would do was cry and scratch his skin. The Dr got so frustrated and told us just feed him and see what he is really allergic to. Well, it was such a traumatic experience to see your baby stop breathing in your arms, I started label reading everything. All he wanted was baby food so we were good. Fast forward to 6 months later, one day he decided he wasn't going to eat baby food at all. Now I'm still breastfeeding him until I come down with Covid. I fed him for the first few days I was sick until I didn't have the strength to hold him and I was brought to the hospital. So what do you give your baby that doesn't want to eat and can't have formula or cows milk? Can't have goat milk because he would throw it up, can't have almond, coconut or oat milk. The Dr researched and found a formula that was $250.00 a can and he loved it. Fast forward to 2 years later, we move back to New Iberia and got a new pediatrician and a new allergy Dr and finally an occupational therapist. The allergy Dr ran new bloodwork and he is only allergic to dairy, eggs, nuts, peanuts, sesame and wheat. So all this time I could hav been trying the foods that he could have before he was old enough to decide what he like and didn't like. Instead, I projected my fears of him not breathing again onto him and he developed a phobia of foods. You try to feed him any kind of table food and he would scream and the fear in his eyes was heartbreaking. He was terrified of foods. He wouldn't even touch it with his hands. Now therapy could feed him and he would try to fight but eventually he would eat. But for me he wouldn't let me feed him. Until Tuesday October 29, 2024. After 4 years of stress, anxiety, wandering if my son would ever eat enough to grow his little body. Wandering if he would get sick from not having anything nourishing put into his body he finally decided to eat rice and gravy without a fuss. Going on months now of just eating rice and gravy and there is only so many different ways to fix rice and gravy until you get sick of cooking it. Then fast forward to March 6 Mrs Lorri asked if I would consider doing a home visit with her so I immediately said yes. I figured it would be like all the other times it would work one time and then we were back to only eating rice and gravy and not letting me feed him anything else but this time my prayers were answered. My son now eats lunch and supper with me without a fuss. He has eaten more in this past month than his whole 4 years of his life. And now he tells me he is hungry and asked me to fix his food for him. You could have given me a million dollars and that wouldn't come close to the feeling of my son opening his mouth and his fear of food is gone. I have lost sleep about this, I have seen specialist, reached out to hypnotherapist to request, that they try hypnosis on him. I even visited with a healing priest to pray over my boy. I was willing to try anything to get my son to eat food and get over his fear of foods. Miracles happen every day and with the help of Mrs Lorri, and all the girls at occupational therapy and lots of prayers my son is eating food with the family without any tears. They will forever be my saving grace!!! There is hope! And occupational therapy works!
