I made up a metaphoric story in supervision the other day and my colleague told me two days later it was so apt he had used it several times. I realized that over 5 decades, nearly 3 of them at Shorehaven, building our wonderful team and serving thousands of clients over that time, I have come up with many stories, many metaphors. You probably have as well. I realized our best stories and metaphors are locked away in our own consulting rooms. We can share them! I can gift them to you and you can add yours on the comments. Or at least you can be inspired to write them down. All that wisdom can be shared. I will share 4 stories this this week in 2 posts. I'll also store them on my Instagram page where they can be found and on Shorehaven's LinkedIn and pages.

As promised, here is TO LOVE TO DOCUMENT. It's the 6th article in my series on Progress Notes. 2 are on detail notes. 2 are on keeping up with documentation. 1 is on Psychotherapy Notes. I've decided to add a 7th article on when to use vague elements in notes. I'll post that one later this week.

TO LOVE TO DOCUMENT covers positive reasons to document quickly and thoroughly, but also negative reasons -- how documentation prevents various harms and problems. It's about our attitude and disposition towards writing documentation -- that a completed treatment session includes a summary of the experience! That the summary (the Note) is highly valuable.

Have you seen my follow-ups to Prolonged Grief Disorder - 7 Themes? I posted two of them. Prolonged Grief Disorder - Assessment expands each of the 7 themes with questions. Prolonged Grief Disorder - 3 Stories tells about 3 clients who taught me the keys to undestanding PGD so I could help people who had reached the impasse in which they could not improve. Here is that third one. I present the themes in polonged grief as

I hope this series on PGD helps you. I am planning to add to this series on grief and loss. Watch for articles on categories of grief and more on treatment. I was asked to write about Disenfranchised Grief and I'll do that next week.

Please share this and follow us to access out posts on psychological poblems and treatments.

Sounds strange, right? But it’s actually a therapeutic technique called Paradoxical Intention.

Instead of fighting racing thoughts, plan a specific time for them — say 15 minutes during the day.
Write your worries down, reflect on them, then stop when your timer ends.

You teach your brain that there’s a time and place for thinking — and that time is not 3 AM.

Structured rumination brings relief. It creates mental boundaries.
When thoughts have their own space, they no longer control all the others.

13 PROS AND CONS TO PRIVATE PSYCHOTHERAPY NOTES©

I promised this article. It's the 5th article in my series on Progress Notes. I have written two articles on staying on top of notes, getting them done on time. I have two articles on writing detailed notes and avoiding vague or minimal notes. Since then, I have been asked to consider if there is a time I would suggested being vague about some data within a progress note. Yes, there are times when that might apply. So, I will add another short document on that, the 7th in this series. To Love to Document© is the 6th article in the series and it will be out next week.

Prolonged Grief Disorder - 3 Stories

Our series on Prolonged Grief Disorder is proving very popular. I posted Pro Grief Disorder - 7 Themes. Then I posted yesterday Prolonged Grief Disorder - Assessment.

Today, I am posting the 3rd piece in the series, Prolonged Grief Disorder - 3 Stories.

I remember clearly how some people I worked long ago experienced grief, but they were not recovering. They were stuck. Eventually, I came to understand the complicating psychodynamics and cognitions behind the prolonged grief. So, here are summaries of 3 early clients who taught me. I learned that grasping the underlying themes led to more effective interventions.

Please share our posts on Prolonged Grief and follow for more.
