Action Alert - APRN Bill Victory

Action Alert -
Ask Governor Evers to Sign SB 394, The APRN Modernization Act!

The legislature has finished their work on SB 394. The bill will go to the Governor shortly for his consideration to either sign or veto. There is no guarantee that he will sign. WNA wants to make sure that the Governor hears from Wisconsin’s nurses about the importance of SB 394!

WNA is using a different approach for sending letters to the Governor. A variety of sample letters has been developed that you can edit and send using the Governors website link (posted below sample letters on WNA webpage - link below). The letters reflect the different nursing roles that include, NP, Psych Mental Health, public health, RN and DNP/Master’s student.

Thank you so much in advance for your time, effort and advocacy! We have never been so close to having this bill become law.

Upcoming Requirements for Gabapentin Prescribing/Dispensing

Pursuant to Wis. Stat. § 961.385 (1) (ag), the Controlled Substances Board has adopted Clearinghouse Rule 20-080, which designates Gabapentin as a monitored prescription drug because of its substantial potential for abuse.

Effective September 1, 2021, practitioners prescribing Gabapentin will be required to review their patient’s monitored prescription drug history report in the ePDMP before issuing a prescription order, and dispensers will be required to electronically submit dispensing data to the ePDMP. Practitioners and dispensers who do not have DEA registration numbers will be exempt from these requirements.

Wisconsin Introduces Bills to Modernize Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Law
Senate Bill 394 and Assembly Bill 396 seek to modernize Wisconsin’s nursing statutes, bringing them closer in line with the Consensus Model. As introduced, these companion bills would create a licensure process for APRNs and retire the requirement for an APRN to work in a documented relationship with a physician in order to prescribe. The bills have been referred to the Committee on Health in their respective chambers.
