Our goal: achieve increased inclusion, support and hope for all affected by mental health and substance use challenges through the advancement of best practices and support of stigma reduction efforts. WISE is a nation wide collaboration of organizations and individuals seeking to achieve dignity and support for all affected by mental illness through the advancement of best practices and support o

f storytelling-for-change in all stigma reduction efforts in our state. The WISE Coalition works together to assess current programming, share and expand what works, increase use of evaluation tools to monitor outcomes, and revise efforts based on the information gained. 🧠 Mental Health Moment: Pity vs. Sympathy vs. Empathy vs. Compassion 💬

It’s easy to confuse these terms—but understanding the difference can change how we connect with someone in crisis:

🔹 Pity says, “That’s so sad” from a distance.
🔹 Sympathy says, “I feel sorry for you,” without stepping into their shoes.
🔹 Empathy says, “I’ve been there, too,” or “I can imagine how that feels.”
🔹 Compassion takes it one step further—it says, “I see your pain, and I’m here to help.”

👉 Compassion is action born from empathy.

When someone is struggling with suicidal thoughts or deep emotional pain, what they often need is not a solution—but connection. A listening ear. A kind word. A reminder that they’re not alone.

💚 Let’s lead with compassion. You never know the impact of showing up with understanding and heart.
