How to adjust valves on any engine with any firing order.
I’ve gave this advise over the phone thousands of times so I thought maybe a written version might be helpful.
This works every time on every engine and although it may not always be the coolest or fastest way, it does ensure that you don’t miss any.
You will need positive locking nuts or polylocks to maintain your adjustment.
Start on whichever side you want and turn the engine until the exhaust valve for the cylinder you’re adjusting starts to open.
At this point, loosen the intake rocker arm adjusting nut for that same cylinder. then slowly tighten it while turning that intake pushrod between your fingers.
When you feel resistance while turning that pushrod you are at zero lash.
At this point back off the adjuster nut to get your correct lash using a feeler gage for solid lifter cams or tighten the adjuster nut 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn for hydraulic cams.
Next lock it down with the center allen head set screw if using polylocks.
Now continue turning the engine until the intake valve on that same cylinder fully opens and then starts to close.
At this point repeat the process on that cylinder’s exhaust valve.
Repeat this process on all cylinders one after the other. Don’t jump around from cylinder to cylinder just do one side at a time. 1-3-5-7 or 2-4-6-8 that way you don’t miss any.
Use the handy little note pictured as your guide and be a pal and share with your friends.

Did you ever wonder why even the factory made all the pistons with 4 equal valve reliefs? The pins were offset so if you installed them wrong you would lose the pin offset benefit. Why not just make them like the example pictured and keep it simple. Valve reliefs to the top of the bore. If you could not remember that you had no business assembling engines on the line.
Things that make you go hmmm...

Over the years I've had Mickey Thompson Valve Covers, Connecting Rods and a Cross Ram. What Cool M/T stuff have you collected?
Got a 389 in here that was built by a “very experienced” Pontiac builder. These are the valve spring pressures. 47 pounds on the seat and less than 190 pounds at .475 lift. We shoot for 120 pounds max seat (hyd flat tappet) and 320 pounds max at full lift.
It had a hyd flat tappet cam that lasted all of a half hour.
Upon further inspection the 092 big car heads had less than .450 retainer to seal clearance and the cam has, or I guess I should say had .475 lift.
Something else to be sure and check on your factory heads is that unforgiving retainer to seal clearance. This is especially true if you're using the long factory retainers that are designed to seat on that second groove o-ring. We shoot for .050 minimum.

Some of us have been doing this a little longer than others!
This old ad from High Performance Pontiac magazine says “We want to be your Pontiac Speed Shop”.
We said it then and we have become that for many of you.
Now if you’re not on that list, please give us a shot at your next engine or engine parts order.
We can and will beat any of the big online guys on price and they can’t even come close to our knowledge of Pontiacs. We can get you parts or build you an engine for almost any other brand too.
We just love Pontiacs more! And, we still buy, sell & trade new and used Pontiac Parts!

Our Love for Pontiacs started with my first car at age 13, a 1964 Tempest 6 cyl 3 on the tree and by the time I had my license I had traded several cars around - the Tempest for an overheating ‘67 GTO Automatic, then the ‘67 GTO for a 4 Speed ‘66 GTO. I had that car all through High School and raced it regularly at OCIR in California.
After Marine Corp Boot Camp I bought a ‘64 GTO that I still have 38 years later. I also have a 6.00 Tagged 220” Rear Engine Pontiac Powered Dragster and “GoatZilla”, a 6.00 Tagged 2400# ‘64 GTO. These cars are all rolling Dynos used to test, prove and improve everything we are planning to bring to the market.
High Performance Injuns started out selling “Injun Kits” with a small ad in High Performance Pontiac Magazine and quickly grew into a full service “Injun Building Enterprise”.
We have grown to now include the creation of Pontiac Cast and Billet Cylinder Heads with many more upcoming products for Pontiac’s created through years of experience and plenty of “Injunuity!”
Pontiac may no longer be in production but we’re doing our best to keep producing Pontiac Excitement. These are unquestionably the greatest cars ever created.
We want to be your Pontiac Speed Shop. Let us know how we can serve you and Thank You for your continued support.
