Do you know the effects of Alcohol on Mental Health?
People may view alcohol and drug use as a coping skill for stress, anger, loneliness, and sadness; But it can actually worsen mental health problems in both the short and long term.
Alcohol can bring feelings of relaxation and diminish anxiety, but it is short term. Alcohol acts as a depressant; This means alcohol affects your mental health by disrupting the chemical balance in the brain.
Altered brain chemistry from drinking can lead to negative emotions, such as, depression, anger, and anxiety. These emotions may be experienced regardless of the initial mood.
Alcohol impairs balance, memory, speech, and judgement which can lead to an increase risk of injury. It slows processing which impairs the ability to anticipate consequences.
