For 91 combined years, Hal and Kay Shaw have been part of the heartbeat of Hendrick Medical Center Brownwood (HMCB). Some individuals knew Kay from the Laboratory, while others saw Hal in the mechanical rooms or on the roof, quietly ensuring the building remained safe and dependable.

As they move into retirement, their story reflects not only their devotion but the steady legacy that has shaped the hospital for generations.

โ€œKay and Hal exemplify dedication, professionalism and institutional loyalty,โ€ said HMCB Chief Operating Officer Jory Lee. โ€œTheir partnership โ€“ both in marriage and mission โ€“ is a remarkable reflection of shared values, mutual support and service-driven leadership that will serve as an example for this organization for years to come.โ€

In recognition of March being Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, help bring attention to the disease by wearing blue on Friday, March 6.

Many younger adults donโ€™t think colorectal cancer applies to them, but recent data suggests otherwise. The American Cancer Societyโ€™s Colorectal Cancer Statistics, 2026 report highlights some notable trends among younger adults.

Colorectal cancer is:
๐Ÿ”ท Increasing in younger populations.
๐Ÿ”ท The No. 1 cause of cancer-related mortality for adults younger than 50.

WHAT TO KNOW: Routine screenings are important because colorectal cancer usually does not cause symptoms early.

WHAT TO DO: Talk to your provider about risk factors and when you should be screened for colorectal cancer.
