SPLINTING
This is a one-day therapy workshop for learning 8 orthopedic hand
conditions and the static splinting required for immobilization of
the injury. This program is intended for introductory knowledge in
hand injuries, therapy, and splinting skills. Participants will learn in a
small group with support and instruction of a Certified Hand
Therapist. Learn hand splinting techniques using a variety of North
Coast Medical thermoplastic and Orficast materials.

therapy treatment of the hand and upper extremities. She holds
an advanced designation as a Certified Hand Therapist, CHT.
Mary’s experience includes treating hand basic and traumatic
injuries and conditions found throughout metropolitan areas such
as Kansas City, Missouri and Washington, DC, to hand conditions
and injuries encountered throughout a rural state like Maine. She

“We are excited to provide hand and Upper Extremity education
to students and therapists. With enhanced understanding and
treatment techniques, therapists will provide exceptional care to
the patients they serve.”
Course Objectives:
• Participants understand the types of
mallet finger or fracture, a tuft or crush
injury of the distal phalanx.
• Participants will fabricate one of three
types of mallet splints that will correct
an extensor tendon/mallet injury and
may also be used for immobilization of
distal phalanx fractures and open crush
injuries.
• Participants will be able to describe why
custom splinting is the best option for
mallet injury.
• Participants will be able to describe
common complications that arise with
incorrect splinting.
• Participants will be able to describe the
impact on Occupation and hand
function without corrective treatment
for a mallet finger.
• Participants will be able to describe the
anatomy of the thumb and mechanism
of injury with a radial or ulnar collateral
ligament injury to the thumb.
• Participants will be able to fabricate a
dorsal or volar hand-based thumb
orthosis which may be utilized for RCL,
UCL, CMC OA or metacarpal fractures.
• Participants will utilize biomechanical
principals in splint fabrication and
choose appropriate materials for the
splint fabrication required.
• Participants will be able to describe a
general hand protocol for thumb
collateral ligament rehabilitation.
• Participants will be able to provide splint
use and care instructions to patients for
Occupation.
• Participants will be able to select an
appropriate splint design for custom
fabrication of a digital metacarpal
fracture and fabricate using correct
biomechanical principles.
