Celebrating progress over perfection is at the heart of child-centered therapy.

Can we agree that silly voices, wiggly bodies, and overexaggerated facial expressions make it all real? They remind us that speech therapy is human, joyful, and full of connection.

When laughter fills the room, when a child finds their voice, when trust starts to grow — that’s where real progress begins.

Progress is built on moments that seem small… until they aren’t.

And to every parent cheering from the sidelines: your encouragement matters more than you know. Keep celebrating those tiny wins — they build confidence that lasts a lifetime! 🤍

There’s a moment in speech therapy that can’t be measured on any assessment—it’s when a child finally lets you into their world.

It’s not instant. It’s earned through listening closely, honoring every attempt to communicate—verbal or not—being playful, noticing what lights them up, and following THEIR lead, not ours.

Then one day, something shifts: they hand you their favorite toy, pause to let you take a turn, or look at you with that spark that says, “You get me.”

That first genuine initiation isn’t just a communication milestone—it’s an invitation. And as a speech-language pathologist, I know it’s one of the most sacred gifts I’ll ever receive. ❤️

Did you know that most language growth happens between therapy sessions and in natural environments? 🤯

Using speech therapy strategies to expand your child’s language skills at home can be extremely helpful! By embedding expansion strategies into daily life, caregivers can turn every day routines into a language-learning opportunity.

1. Expectant Pauses
Start communicating, then pause and wait — don’t rush to fill silence.
·“Ready, set… (pause)” → Child: “Go!”
·“5 little monkeys jumping on the (pause)” → Child: “Bed!”

How it helps: Expectant pauses are powerful because they shift the interaction from adult-led input to child-led output, giving a child time and encouragement to express themselves. They also support communication initiation and reduce prompt dependency.

2. Repetition & Routines
Embed target words/phrases/songs in daily routines.
· Always say “Open the door!” when leaving.
· Make it fun! Consistently use songs during transitions that may be challenging.

How it helps: Routines provide predictable structure that reduces stress during transitions, while also giving repeated, meaningful opportunities for children to hear, practice, and master language in context. Predictable routines strengthen comprehension and expressive language use.

3. Teaching vs. Testing
· Modeling language instead of “quizzing” (testing language, demanding responses) shifts interactions from testing to teaching.
· Instead of:
o “What’s this?” (while pointing to a picture of a duck). Try: “That’s a duck. The duck says quack quack!” 🦆
o “Say ‘car.’ What is it?” Try: “Vroom car! Fast car! Make it go!” 🚙
o “Can you say ball?” Try: “Ball! Roll the ball. My turn!” ⚽️

How it helps: Teaching enriches input, context, and repetition which supports reducing pressure, building comprehension first, then natural expressive language. These all make children more likely to use language expressively!

Save this post and try them yourself! What are some of your favorite language strategies to use at home?

👋Not pictured: Xander using his high-tech speech-generating device to request to be “all done” with speech three times before this moment early into our session.

This video captures the beauty of honoring the whole child through total communication.

Total communication is an evidence-based approach that integrates multiple modalities—verbal speech, gestures, sign language, pictures, and AAC systems. By giving Xan access to all his tools, we support his autonomy and reduce pressure, making space for intrinsically motivating, authentic communication.

In this session, Mom and I followed Xander’s lead. With modeling and access to his device, gestures, signing, and verbal speech, he chose to engage—and even sing!

✨This is individualized therapy in action: building upon his strengths, honoring his preferences, and recognizing his communication takes many powerful forms.

✨ From Cause & Effect to Conversation ✨
Nine months ago, there was a post celebrating Miss W’s first signs of understanding cause and effect—a foundational skill that supports vocabulary growth, sentence formation, storytelling, and social connection.

Today, she’s a confident communicator! 🌟
You’d never guess this little ray of sunshine started her session asleep in Dad’s lap. With the dedication of her whole team—and the incredible involvement and consistency from her parents—Miss W now independently labels, answers questions, makes intentional choices, and engages with others with purpose and joy!

We are so proud of how far she’s come. 💛

Happy Speech-Language-Hearing Month!

Early intervention speech therapy are services provided to infants and toddlers (typically birth to age 3). There are strong evidence-based outcomes that demonstrate clear and lasting benefits associated with early intervention. These benefits span communication development, social-emotional skills, academic readiness, and family functioning.

Take a closer look at the evidence-based outcomes supported research below:

🤟 Improved Communication and Language Development 🗣

•Earlier gains in expressive and receptive language skills
Children who receive early speech-language therapy show faster development of vocabulary, sentence structure, and understanding of language.(Source: McLean & Cripe, 1997; Guralnick, 2011)

• Increased likelihood of catching up to peers
Early intervention significantly increases the chance that children with speech/language delays will meet age-level milestones. (Source: Law et al., 2003 (Systematic Review))

🧠 Better Cognitive and Academic Outcomes 🔠

• Children receiving early therapy have improved attention, memory, and pre-literacy skills, laying the foundation for academic success. (Source: National Early Intervention Longitudinal Study (NEILS))

•Speech and language skills are strong predictors of later reading and math abilities, particularly when supported before kindergarten. (Source: Catts et al., 2002)

💪 Improved Family Confidence and Engagement 🫂

•Families receiving early intervention report increased confidence in supporting their child’s communication at home. (Source: Bruder, 2010)

• Parents trained in communication strategies become effective facilitators of language growth in natural routines. (Source: Roberts & Kaiser, 2011)

📢WHY IT MATTERS 📢
Speech-language therapy provided during the birth-to-3 window takes advantage of the brain's plasticity, maximizes developmental gains, and leads to better long-term outcomes in communication, learning, and behavior.

One of my favorite activities to use while expanding language and increasing trails is using a popper!

Today we fished out "magic" with our magnetic magic wand while finding our tiny "k" and "g" objects. For each object, we practiced while we popped ocean bubbles! This lead to 110 productions in just 15 minutes.

Way to go, our ocean loving Mr. O! 👍🪸

ONLY two and a half months of speech therapy and goals have been met! 🥳

So grateful to have had this journey with Miss P as she completed her time in speech therapy today! She is such a determined and inspiring little girl!

P's mom reached out for a free consult earlier this year. Following a detailed Zoom call to discuss developmental expectations and how P was producing /s/ airflow at this time, we determined together that she would benefit from direct speech services.

Although SLPs don't have a crystal ball, I shared that I expected only a few months of therapy to get to where we wanted to be. Using the combination of beneficial intervention strategies (e.g., visual supports, clinician modeling) and having a family member present in every session for carryover home support, we made our way quickly! Please DON'T "wait and see", book your consult today at www.midcoastslp.com

Low communication pressure is one of my favorite foundational tools used everyday in effective pediatric speech therapy. This approach supports communication development by creating a safe, supportive, and low-stress environment. It encourages children to engage without fear of failure or judgment.

Why Low Communication Pressure Matters:
• It builds trust and connection
• It encourages natural communication
• It helps reduce any potential anxiety and resistance
• *It supports every child's individual communication style*

On this rainy Friday, this strategy was implemented using everyday activities, coloring and singing! Notice how Miss L joins in to sing even when it wasn't her turn.

What's your favorite rainy day activity? 🌧☔️
