During this , MaineHealth is celebrating the achievements of some of the exceptional women who have contributed to the success of the organization over the years. Today we are pleased to feature Ruth Weeks Henry, a Red Cross nurse and World War I veteran.
Nurse Henry began providing the nursing and public health services that would ultimately become CHANS Home Health & Hospice in Bath in 1931. She cared for the sick at home and conducted clinics for mothers and babies.
In 1947, the Red Cross turned its attention to civil defense and disaster relief, and the agency became a community driven non-profit called the Public Health Nursing Association. The agency went through a growth transition and expansion in 1973 and became the Bath-Brunswick Regional Health Agency.
In 1978, it was incorporated as CHANS (Community Health and Nursing Services), which continues today to build on the solid foundation established by Mrs. Henry.
Nurse Henry retired from nursing in the late 1950s. She died in 1964 at 72 years of age, and she is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Bath. Today, CHANS Home Health & Hospice continues to build on the foundation Mrs. Henry established.
