This 2021 study explored how officers came to initiate mental wellness services, why they chose to engage or not engage in such resources, and what organizational and supervisory factors promoted service utilization. The results highlight the importance of reducing stigma from the top down: simple put, officers are more likely to access and engage with mental health services when there is transparent departmental policies on mental health, mandatory and confidential preventative care, and access to a culturally competent clinician.

At Midcoast Counseling Group, PLLC, we offer a team of culturally competent clinicians trained in evidenced based practice. We also have an extensive network of responder specialized clinicians we refer to regularly. We offer individual and intensive treatment, and responder wellness services to first responders and public safety agencies throughout the state of Maine. Ah, the good life. Sinatra sang about it, philosophers pontificated on the meaning of it, psychologists studied it and we all want it. But what is it and how do you get there? Carl Rogers suggests that the good life is not a fixed state, but a process.

To begin shifting towards the good life: hunt down the positives in the present, appreciate the process versus focusing solely on outcomes and future desires, and if you find yourself stuck due to past or recent trauma, consider finding a good therapist to assist you.

I am now a CERTIFIED EMDR Therapist! This is something that I've been working on for the last twelve months--and it feels damn good to accomplish this goal.

Curious about the difference between a trained EMDR Therapist and a Certified EMDR Therapist?

A Trained EMDR Therapist has attended the Basic EMDR Training through EMDRIA (EMDR International Association) and has obtained the minimum number of hours with a certified EMDR Consultant.

A Certified EMDR Therapist has, in addition to meeting all of the requirements for Trained Therapist, attended advanced EMDR trainings, conducted at least 50 EMDR sessions with at least 25 clients, and has obtained additional hours with a certified EMDR Consultant. Ongoing education and consultation is required to maintain certification.
