The Chickadee team had a blast at Thornton Oaks last week. Each resident received an individual balance assessment, and everyone got moving and tried a variety of exercises to build better balance!

We are so impressed by your progress, Barbara! Keep up the good work at Wilcox!

Receiving emails from our clients about how our training program impacts their lives is truly the greatest gift. Today, I received a heartwarming email from Barbara, a dedicated member of our community, sharing how her commitment to health and fitness has transformed her life. Just yesterday morning, I had the privilege of having her in my training session, and I was thrilled to see her progress and newfound confidence, especially after attending a seminar we hosted with our neighbors Chickadee Physical Therapy.

While preparing to share her story, I found a photo of Barbara and Coach Bree from July 2022 when she was recognized as our Athlete Spotlight. Today, Bree and Barbara took a new photo together. Although we witness Barbara’s progress every day in the gym, seeing a side-by-side comparison of her transformation over two years of consistency and commitment is truly inspiring.

Amazing work, Barbara!

We can tout our encouragement and praise all day long, but hearing directly from Barbara about how our training program and the support of our community have benefited her really tells the story.

Here's what Barbara shared:

"So I just want to thank you, Bree, Trevor (although he’s no longer at Wilcox), and the rest of the Wilcox family! It’s been a great month! Firstly, I’m eating healthier and am now down to my goal weight. Other gym members have commented that I look healthier, my posture has improved, and I’m able to do moves/exercises that I couldn’t initially do. After the osteoporosis talk, I started challenging myself with more jumping, something I had originally been told not to do after knee replacement surgery. Today, I got in 15 consecutive jumps!! My shoulder has improved to the point that I can push the range of motion, I’ve increased the weight I use in exercises, and I’m able to challenge my stability in various planks we’ve been doing lately! Thank you to gym members for the encouragement to push myself! My original goal for joining Wilcox was to be healthier overall and more active! I’ve made progress in both of these areas and plan to continue. Thank you so much! This is why I love coming to Wilcox!"

Thank you again, Barbara! Your words are the greatest gift and are so appreciated. We couldn't be more proud of your hard work and continued successes. Keep up the great work—you are an inspiration to me and to others in our community! 💪💜

It was a pleasure to share our knowledge about how to prevent and reverse Osteoporosis through exercise in acknowledgement of Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month. Thanks for hosting us, Wilcox Wellness & Fitness!

At Wilcox Wellness & Fitness, we are dedicated to supporting our community in every aspect of their health. One of the ways we extend our commitment beyond training sessions is through our Wellness Seminars. Yesterday, we had the pleasure of hosting our new neighbors, Chickadee Physical Therapy, who shared a wealth of information about osteoporosis. They discussed effective strategies for prevention and ways to mitigate its impact if diagnosed. A big thank you to Christina and Casey for sharing their valuable time and professional insights on this important topic!

Happy Movement Monday! In continued recognition of the American Heart Association's Move More Month, CPT would like to share an easy way to test your muscular power. Check out which Chickadee staff won the power test (and to get a sighting of our cheerleader, Daisy)! 🐕💪

The 30 Second Chair Stand Test (30 SCT) is a great way to assess the muscular power in your legs. To perform this test, sit in a chair with your arms crossed in front of your chest. Set a timer for 30 seconds, and count how many times you can stand up fully and sit back into the chair within 30 seconds. Swipe to see how you compare to the average score for your age group!

Muscle power is your muscles’ ability to contract with speed. Muscle power is an important function that assists with quick movements such as jumping, throwing, and running, as well as making quick balance reactions that help us avoid falling. Humans tend to lose muscle power with aging, so we need to train power movements to maintain our ability to move quickly as we age.

Thursday marked National Wildlife Week (April 4th-9th). In honor, we thought it would be fun to reveal a fun fact about Chickadees.

Did you know that Chickadees increase their brain size by up to 30% in late summer, early fall? This increase in neurons in the hippocampus remains throughout winter, only to shrink back in the spring, ridding the brain of neurons that are old and unused. The increase is a result of the number of food storage locations they must remember. Chickadees can remember hundreds to thousands of hiding spots.

NPR just did a podcast about these clever birds, check it out.

Tiny, black-capped chickadees have big memories. They stash food in hundreds to thousands of locations in the wild – and then come back to these stashes when other food sources are low. Now, researchers at Columbia University's Zuckerman Institute think neural activity that works like a barcode ma...

Each April, the American Heart Association celebrates Move More Month to encourage Americans to integrate movement into their daily lives. The staff at Chickadee PT will be sharing some of our favorite ways to move. Check out our Movement Monday challenges throughout the month of April.

Up first in our movement challenge series is the 10-min Squat Test. The purpose of this test is to assess bilateral functional flexion of the hips, knees, and ankles. To perform this test you will rest at the bottom of a squat (hips below knees) for a total of 10 mins. Remember to keep your heels on the ground and your back straight. For more information check out Kelly Starrett's post. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vH72ycz0NOo

Were you able to go the full 10-mins? Did you notice any challenges (back or hips aching, shins burning)? Comment on your experience or even post your video below. Happy Moving!!😁
