I highly recommend the show heartstopper on Netflix. Not only does the creator do such a fabulous job with lgbtq+ and mental health issues, but she creates a respectful, realistic progression of relationships and love.

So… today is autism awareness day. 25 years ago I had no idea what autsim was but I began a long career of working with these students as a math teacher, special education interventionist, and now behavior analyst. I was so good at it that they called me the autism whisperer. Then my son got diagnosed and the reaction of my parents was, let’s say odd. My mom said, “they thought you had autism, but it was adhd”

Fast foward to april 2021 and i was looking thru the boxes my parents left after passing and one had all my educational records. Right at the front was a diagnostic report from the university of chicago with my name on it with a diagnosis of autism at age 3. It took me 6 months before I said anything even to my wife. But when I did and after 20 online tests, I started an evaluation and in April 2022 a psychologist diagnosed me. At the meeting, I said “it’s a no right?” And he said, “oh no, you were more than 2 standard deviations from the mean. It’s definitely autism.”

Dumbfounded, to say the least. It took my dissertation and writing on my positionality for me to start talking about it to the public, clients, friends, and family. I experienced a mix of acceptance, rejection, suspicion, and doubt from others and myself. The worse part was reconciling my own identity with this truth… It was like finding out that I was born inters*x and my parents decided for me what s*x and gender I should be. I am still on that journey of my own acceptance, but I’m learning that the only person I need validation from is me.

I am a former teacher, a behavior analyst, father, husband, researcher, and autistic. It’s not all who I am, but it’s a big reason I am who I am. Happy autism awareness!

K. Ive got a lot clients with the same “PDA” as I do. But I’ve always come back to my most potent reinforcer… karaoke. No excuses—do the work, get 3 songs to sing. Btw, apple music and its sing along feature has really made this more possible. I love it!

Hi Parents!

We’re back for the Spring Semester! Before we know it, it will be Spring Break, testing, and then summer will be upon us 😳!

The kiddos have torn through the snack stash…teenagers can REALLY do some damage in the grocery department 😂! I am resharing my Amazon Wishlist to restock on a few staples and student favorites. Cheez-its and Capri Suns are our number one items!

Please do not feel obligated to purchase items, and as always in person donations are always welcome!
