Happy Father’s Day to our incredible homebirth dads! 🏡👶💪

You were there for the birth — filling the tub, dimming the lights, holding space (and sometimes catching the baby!) — and now you’re still showing up every single day.

From those first skin-to-skin snuggles to midnight diaper changes, babywearing walks, and silly songs at bedtime — you’re building something beautiful: a connected, grounded family.

Homebirth is just the beginning.
Being a present, loving parent? That’s the real magic.

We see the way you support your partner, nurture your little ones, and lean into this wild, sacred journey called fatherhood.

Thank you for being all in — at birth, and every day after. Happy Father’s Day!

So many of you have asked how you can help. One of the most powerful things you can do right now is share your story. If a community midwife supported you through pregnancy, birth, or postpartum, please speak up—your voice can make a real difference.

HB 4553 is still pending and is expected to be revisited on Monday. We need lawmakers to understand how deeply midwives impact families.

You can find the committee’s contact information here: https://house.texas.gov/committee/410

Please take a moment to call and email the members of the Committee on Public Health. Tell them why midwifery matters to you and urge them to protect access to this essential care.

Every story, every call, every email counts.

Thank you for trusting me with one of life’s most sacred moments. It means more than I can say. 🤍

Why Movement Matters in Pregnancy — Especially for Natural Birth 💪🤰

If you’re hoping for an unmedicated or physiologic birth, one of the best things you can do to prepare is... move your body.

No, we’re not talking intense workouts. We’re talking gentle, intentional movement that helps your baby find the best position, keeps your pelvis mobile, and builds the endurance and confidence you’ll need for labor.

✨ Why movement matters:
• Keeps your pelvis balanced + aligned
• Encourages optimal fetal positioning (hello, head down + engaged!)
• Improves circulation and reduces swelling
• Boosts strength and stamina for birth
• Supports your nervous system = less fear, more flow

🏃‍♀️ Simple things that help:
~Daily walks
~Hip circles on a birth ball
~Prenatal yoga or stretching
~Squats + pelvic tilts
~Dancing in your living room (yes, really!)

Think of movement as a love note to your future labor. Every little bit helps prepare your body and baby for a smoother, more intuitive birth experience 💛

What is your favorite way to move during pregnancy? Share with us in the comments.

🚨 CALL TO ACTION: Oppose HB 4553 🚨
Hearing: Monday, April 28 • 8:00 AM • Room E2.030, Texas Capitol

House Bill 4553 threatens the autonomy of midwifery in Texas under the pretense of data collection. This bill opens the door to invasive oversight, misrepresentation of outcomes, and increased medicalization—without respecting the nuance and individual care midwives provide.

👩‍🍼 Midwives are not the problem. We are part of the solution.
🛑 HB 4553 undermines family choice and the future of community birth.

📞 What You Can Do TODAY:

Call the Public Health Committee – Urge them to OPPOSE HB 4553.
📞 512-463-0806

Contact Chairman VanDeaver – Ask him to withdraw support.

✍️ Sample Message:
Dear [Chairman VanDeaver / Public Health Committee Member],

I am a [licensed midwife/client/family member/supporter] writing to strongly oppose House Bill 4553, scheduled for hearing on Monday, April 28. This bill, though presented as a neutral data reporting proposal, contains harmful and confusing language that would result in over regulation, redundant statistics collection, the medicalization of and the erosion of midwifery care in Texas.

Texas midwives are already held to high standards of safety and accountability. This bill duplicates existing reporting, imposes burdensome new rules, threatens privacy, and undermines informed choice in birth.

I respectfully urge you to oppose HB 4553 and support true solutions that protect safe birthing options across our state.

Sincerely,

Why Prioritizing Protein in Pregnancy Matters 🤍

Growing a human is no small thing — your body is working overtime, and one of the best ways to support it is by making sure you're getting enough protein every day.

Protein isn’t just for muscles — it’s a key building block for your baby’s developing brain, organs, and tissues. It also helps support your expanding blood volume, your uterus, your placenta, your tissue integrity… and even your energy levels.

✨ Some benefits of protein during pregnancy:
• Supports baby’s growth and cell development
• Helps balance blood sugar + energy
• Can reduce swelling and support healthy blood pressure
• Keeps you feeling fuller longer (goodbye, constant snacking!)

📌 How much do you need?
Every body is different, but most pregnant folks need a minimum of 80–100g of protein a day — and more in the third trimester.

🥚 Easy protein-rich foods:
-Eggs
-Greek yogurt
-Chicken, fish, red meat, tofu
-Beans, lentils
-Nuts + seeds
-Protein smoothies (add collagen, h**p, nut butters!)

Don’t stress perfection — just aim to include a little protein with each meal and snack. Your body (and baby!) will thank you 💛

Share in the comments how you aim for 30-35 grams of protein per meal and roughly 10-15 grams per snack.

If you're planning to have a baby during the holiday season, it's important to consider choosing a care provider who will be available during that time. In hospital settings, there can sometimes be pressure to induce labor around the holidays to avoid delivering on days like Thanksgiving or Christmas. That’s something worth asking about when you're meeting with potential care providers.

If your due date is in November or December, I’d love to chat with you about midwifery care and what a homebirth with me might look like. Feel free to email me at riley@rileythemidwife.com, visit my website to fill out a contact form, or schedule a free virtual consultation.

Hey friends — long time no post!

It’s been about 6 months since I’ve shown up here, and honestly? I’ve been soaking up time with my own family while continuing to support growing ones in this beautiful midwife life.

Birth work is deeply tied to family — not just the ones I serve, but my own too. Sometimes stepping back from social media means being more present where it matters most. But I’ve missed sharing the real, raw, and amazing moments that come with this calling.

So I’m easing back into posting, and I’d love to bring you along — stories from the birth room, little nuggets of wisdom, and the sweet balance (and chaos!) of midwife + family life.

Thanks for sticking around. Excited to reconnect! If there’s something you’ve been wanting to ask or see more of, let me know!

We watched the full moon come and go, still waiting for this sweet baby to arrive. At her prenatal appointment on Friday afternoon, her daughter asked, “Why didn’t the baby come with the full moon?” This mama remained patient, and by Saturday morning, I received a text—labor had begun, and we’d soon be meeting her baby that day.

The birth team arrived an hour later, set up our supplies, prepared the birth pool, and checked on both Mom and baby. Everything looked great, but Mom wasn’t quite ready for us to stay, so we headed to a nearby café for coffee and breakfast.

About 45 minutes later, we returned. After listening to the baby, Mom announced she was ready to get in the pool. Dad helped us fill it, and she eased into the warmth, often called the "midwife’s epidural."

Not long after, I checked the baby again, and during two back-to-back contractions, I knew we were close. With the next contraction, she began to push. I quickly put on my gloves just as her water broke, guiding her through the final moments. Shortly after, her baby was born, safely welcomed into her arms.

It was an honor and a blessing to care for this wonderful family. I’m in awe of her strength and grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside her throughout this pregnancy, especially as we explored homeopathy and ways to support moms and babies in the community.

As the weather is starting to get cooler for those of us in Texas, this is my favorite stew to make on those chilly days and to bring to a newly postpartum family. Pairs well well with fresh sourdough or homemade bread bowls. I will post the link to the recipe in my stories or follow@tastythin for more great recipes.
