Oberlin-Ford Funeral Home was purchased by Earl C. Oberlin, Sr. in 1922 and known as Pray and Oberlin Mortuary. After Mr. Oberlin's death in 1927, the name was changed to Oberlin Funeral Home and was operated by Thelma Oberlin, one of the first women in Ohio to be licensed as a funeral director and embalmer.
In 1936, Mrs. Oberlin married B. Burr Ford who was also a licensed funeral director and embalmer, and he died in 1952. On February 1, 1956, Thelma and her son, Earl C. Oberlin, Jr., formed a partnership known as Oberlin-Ford Funeral Homes.
A new chapel was added to the facility in 1960, which gave the opportunity to offer multiple services if needed. In 2003 and 2004, a children's room, a new entry ramp, and a covered walk-way were added. Also, new automatic doors were installed to aid anyone with a physical challenge. A crematory was installed and began operation as Northwest Ohio Cremation Service. The Crematory was installed in our Greenisen Chapel in Bryan. This added another level of care offered to families in Northwest Ohio and Northeast Indiana. No longer do you need to trust another entity to care for your loved one who chose cremation as their final disposition.
In 2009, Tom Turnbull became a partner in the funeral homes, and the name of all the funeral homes were changed to our current name of Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home and Crematory.
In February 2012, Cliff Oberlin and Tom Turnbull purchased the physical building of the former Orr Funeral Home, through a Sheriff's Sale at the Williams County Courthouse. After many months of renovation, the State Board of Embalmer's and Funeral Directors issued the funeral home license for Oberlin-Turnbull Funeral Home & Crematory to serve the communities of West Unity, Alvordton, Kunkle and the surrounding areas.
We thank you for your trust and confidence. We will strive to earn your continued confidence. We consider it an honor to serve you and your family in their time of loss
