Oakley and Bentley are perfect examples of what therapy dogs should be. (We're not even being biased!) Therapy dogs should:
Be emotionally attuned – able to “read the room” and respond to human emotions with warmth and affection.
Have a calm temperament – stays relaxed in new environments and around lots of people.
Be gentle – interacts softly, especially with children, the elderly, or medically fragile individuals.
Be friendly – enjoys being around people and seeks positive interaction.
Be patient – tolerates being petted, hugged, or touched unexpectedly without stress.
Be confident – comfortable in different settings (hospitals, schools, offices) and not easily startled.
Be adaptable – adjusts to unfamiliar sounds, smells, and situations without distress.
Be social – gets along well with other dogs and animals, if present.
Have good manners – doesn’t jump, bark excessively, or pull on the leash.
Be attentive – responds well to cues from the handler and pays attention to people.
