What if I gave you a one-page summary of the "What to do if your child doesn't participate in therapy" podcast from a couple weeks ago?

I was shocked by the response to that podcast- therapists wanted to share it with their clients and supervisees and colleagues, and parents wanted to share it with their therapist or their parenting partner or anyone else who has an opinion on what kids should (or shouldn't) be doing in therapy.

Luckily I have brilliantly talented friends and colleagues who make beautiful things so here you go. A one page infographic you can share with absolutely anybody you want to.

You can download the JPG right here on Facebook. JPGs are good for saving to your phone and sharing on social media. If you want a PDF, head over to my website. PDFs are good for printing and sending via email. https://robyngobbel.com/childintherapy/

I hope it helps :)

I’m still trying to wrap my mind around another tragic school shooting. My heart is so heavy. Children should feel safe at school and in all areas of their lives. I’m also left thinking about all the children and teens who are hearing the news, overhearing adult conversations, and seeing it play out on social media.

Below are some good resources on how to talk to your children during these uncertain and scary times. (Graphic in comments)

Home should be the safest place for your kid. I was raised where that wasn’t the case. Fear and intimidation ran rampant. I remember feeling safer at school than at home. That should not be. I do my part to help parents see that.

You can't rush a child into growing up anymore than you can yell at a plant to bear fruit. The conditions in which a child will meet their full potential involves play, rest, connection, and time in nature; not punishment and coercion.

More often than not anger is actually a secondary emotion that covers up a child's fear, sadness, grief - their overall vulnerability. In many families it's often OK to be angry but not OK to show tears, shame, or fear. Know that your child is in a state of protection when they're angry, and if you can stay with it long enough and validate their internal experience, it will melt away into it's true expression: pain.

Humans, both young and old, have a desire to make sense of the world that they live in. Our actions, requests, and discipline needs to make sense to our children so they can feel secure in our guidance.

I often hear from parents that their child is "great at school but sometimes difficult at home." Your child views you and the home as their safe place to be who they are and to express themselves. It is not a personal attack against you. Check out Dr. Nicole Beurkens' strategies for helping your dysregulated child when they come home from school!

Let’s confront the deeply ingrained influence of behaviorism in the fields of education and psychology. Let’s begin to include the wisdom of applied relational & affective neuroscience into our practices in understanding, helping and supporting children.
I’ll be providing all the research you need to advocate for this important paradigm shift in my upcoming book❣️
