Struggling with your mental health? Here are a few ways your diet can impact your mental well-being in a positive direction 🤗 …

Research has found that nutrition may have the power to prevent and or treat depression. The SMILES trial was the first randomized control trial which demonstrated that adopting a Mediterranean Diet can reduce symptoms of depression 🤍

Some of the benefits found were:
- A high fiber diet can increase the production of short chain fatty acids, which helps reduce inflammation in the body, promotes beneficial bacteria growth and reduces harmful bacteria in the gut that promotes disease 🌽🍓
- Limiting ultra-processed foods and having foods rich in antioxidants can help reduce oxidative stress, which can cause neuronal damage 🌭

So which foods in particular could help prevent and treat depression? 🤓

Simply increasing fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, legumes and fish (again, bringing us back to the basics of the Mediterranean diet!) 🍎🥦🍚🫘🥜🐠

In detail, fruits and veggies may help reduce depressive symptoms due to their high antioxidant levels, fiber and micronutrient content🍎🥦

Nuts have been shown to increase levels of brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF), which has been found to be low in patients living with depression 🥜

Additionally, fish are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids which may be beneficial due to their anti-inflammatory properties which can increase levels of BDNF as well! 🐠

According to the NIH, although research in this area is in its early stages, the emerging field of research focused on the human microbiome suggests an important role for the gut microbiota in influencing brain development, behavior and mood in humans 😊

It’s been a while since I’ve popped on here to say hi 👋, so if you’re new—welcome! I’m Chelsea, a registered dietitian of 9 years and the founder of Mindfull Nutrition, where we merge intuitive eating & functional nutrition to heal the body through lifestyle medicine. 💫

I wear a lot of hats—business owner, wife (and unofficial EA to my husband 😂), mom of 3 littles, friend, and forever a student of health & wellness. I’m incredibly passionate about what I do and love helping others feel their best from the inside out! 🥑💛

A few fun facts about me:

How much protein should I get throughout the day? And what does that look like in real life? 🧐 Super common questions!

In short, your protein needs can be calculated a few different ways. However, the most common way is to take your body weight in kilograms and multiply by 1-2g/kg of body weight to get your range of protein needs 🍗

According to the CDC, American women aged 20 years and above weigh an average of 170.8 pounds. Thus, if we do a bit of quick math, 170.8lbs / 2.2lbs/kg = 77.6 kg 👍

So our protein needs for the average adult female would equate out to about 78-155g of protein/day, about 1-2g of protein/kg.

So what does about 80-100+g of protein look like per day? 🤓

Take a quick look at some of the examples above! Some of these meals could be as simple as a turkey and cheese sandwich or a handful or 2 of nuts in the afternoon 🥪🥜

Keep in mind we of course want to things balanced, so pair these proteins/fats with a great complex carb! For example with our chicken breast, salmon or lean ground beef for dinner, add a sweet potato, rice or whole grain pasta for example 🍗 + 🍚 + 🥦
