I’m on my soapbox again...because somehow we’re still expecting more emotional regulation, flexibility, and patience from children than from grown adults.

Kids are allowed to be tired. To say no. To be bored. To check out.
They are people, not projects.

If you’ve ever needed a reminder that rest, boundaries, and support aren’t rewards (they’re needs) this one’s for you (and them).

Let’s stop molding children for adult convenience and start building relationships based on trust and compassion.

There’s been a lot of conversation lately about PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance), and it’s encouraging to see more awareness building. At the same time, I’ve noticed some confusion...especially around the difference between PDA and general demand avoidance.

They can look alike on the surface, but they’re not the same thing and understanding that distinction can really shift how we support neurodivergent kids and adults.

If this topic has been on your mind too, I’d love for you to read it.

Rejection sensitivity is real. And it hurts.

At TCOB, we know we are not the right fit for everyone and that is ok.
We do not follow neurotypical social norms and that is ok.
We communicate differently and that is ok.
We lead with authenticity, not compliance. We center lived experience over optics. We do not bend ourselves into ableist molds just to make others comfortable.

But when people who do not understand the neurodiversity movement take time out of their day to leave harmful reviews or misrepresent what we do, it hurts deeply. When RSD is triggered, it can derail our momentum, make us question our work, and weigh on us long after the words are read (rumination can be debilitating).

If TCOB has made a difference for you or your family, if you have felt seen, heard, supported, please consider leaving us a Google review (link in comments). It may seem small, but for us, it is fuel to keep fighting for affirming, respectful care in a world that still does not always get it.

Your words matter. And we are listening.

You all know that I avoid pathologizing language wherever possible. After completing a project on Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria, I have found a common co-occurring Autistic experience whose name accurately defines its impact on people. Dysphoria is derived from the Greek language, and roughly translated, means that something has discomfort that is "bad" and "difficult" to bear. RSD occurs when the common human experience of rejection sensitivity becomes 'unbearable'.

It is well known that many people with ADHD have co-occurring RSD. Some sources suggest up to 99% of ADHD-ers experience RSD. Research into the Autistic experience of RSD is emerging, and I could not find stats on the prevalence, but we do know that 50 to 70% of Autistic people have a co-occurring diagnosis of ADHD. So--ya. Many Autistic people experience the emotional upheaval that is RSD.

Coming soon: a graphic on Autistic traits that I believe makes us more vulnerable to RSD.
