Cold Weather Safety Alert | Temps Below 20°F

When temperatures drop below 20°F, your risk for hypothermia, frostbite, and carbon monoxide exposure increases. Stay warm and safe with these tips:

Dress Smart
• Layer clothing (base layer + insulation + outer layer)
• Cover exposed skin, hat, gloves, scarf, and warm socks
• Choose wind-resistant and waterproof outerwear

Stay Warm Indoors
• Keep your home heated safely (avoid space heaters near flammable items)
• Seal drafts and close unused rooms
• If heating costs are a concern, check local warming centers or assistance programs

Heat Safely
• Never use ovens, grills, or generators indoors
• Ensure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working
• Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from furniture

Travel Carefully
• Limit time outdoors when possible
• Keep an emergency kit in your car (blanket, flashlight, snacks)
• Check on older adults, children, and neighbors who may need help

Know the Warning Signs
• Frostbite: numbness, pale or waxy skin
• Hypothermia: shivering, confusion, slurred speech
Seek medical help immediately if symptoms appear.

Cold weather can be dangerous but preparation saves lives.

January is Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month-
Carbon monoxide, also known as CO, is called the “invisible killer” because it's a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas. It is undetectable to the human senses, so people may not know that they are being exposed.

Did you know:
Breathing in CO at high levels can be fatal. More than 150 people in the United States die every year from accidental non-fire-related CO.
