You can barely make it through the 10:00 news without falling asleep, but as soon as you go upstairs and get into bed you feel wide awake. That bit of activity as you get ready to go to bed is probably not the reason you are suddenly (frustratingly) alert.

I’m often asked about whether eating at night will interfere with sleep or cause weight gain. The problem with late snacking is that we tend to make poor food choices later in the day and often end up eating more than we planned. Eating later in the evening won’t cause you to gain weight as long as your total intake stays within the range of your daily calorie needs.

So is it ok to have a bedtime snack? Yes, but keep it small and nutritious. Falling asleep isn’t easy if you’re truly hungry. Avoid fatty or spicy foods. Add some protein if you can. A few almonds or a small bowl of cereal with milk may be just what you need.

Many people worry about gaining weight when eating later than a particular time. This article separates fact from fiction when it comes to late-night eating and weight gain.
