โš ๏ธ Awareness Matters in Our Community

A recent report from Investigative Post highlights concerns surrounding Save the Michaels and its management practices.

According to the reporting:

โ€ข A 2024 state audit identified issues related to financial oversight, tracking of employee hours, and failure to provide required documentation.
โ€ข The audit found that founder Avi Israel and his wife were both paid employees and voting board members โ€” which conflicts with state policy โ€” and that certain compensation increases and a loan from nonprofit funds lacked required approvals.
โ€ข The Erie County Department of Mental Health has announced it will not renew contracts with the organization after this summer.
โ€ข County officials have stated that alternative arrangements are being made to ensure services continue for those who rely on them.

This isnโ€™t about attacking anyone. Itโ€™s about a larger truth:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Not every organization with good intentions is operating with strong governance, transparency, or compliance.

In the nonprofit world โ€” especially in behavioral health and recovery โ€” accountability matters. Oversight matters. Proper board structure matters. Financial transparency matters.

When public dollars and vulnerable populations are involved, good intentions must be matched with responsible operations.

Stay informed. Read the facts. Ask questions. Accountability protects the people we serve.

Erie County is pulling funds from the addiction treatment program in light of audits that uncovered fiscal mismanagement and other problems.

๐ŸšŒ 333 individuals received non-medical transportation
๐Ÿš Over $19,000 in monthly bus passes distributed so people could get to work, appointments, and stability
