How do I know if my insurance will cover therapy services?

The best way to find out is to call and ask your insurance company. Good questions to ask include;

1. What will my co-pay be?

2. Is there a session limit?

3. What is my out of pocket maximum?

4. Do I have a deductible?

What if you do not accept my insurance?

You can call your insurance and ask if you have out of network benefits that would cover the services you require or your SLP can give you a superbill that you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement.

Can insurance deny services?

Yes, if services are deemed not medically necessary your insurance can deny payment for speech therapy services. Your Speech Language Pathologist will make sure to complete individualized, standardized, objective and detailed reports to support the requested services if therapy is needed.

How do I find a Speech Pathologist who is in-network with my insurance?

If you are in the Buffalo, New York area Back 2 You Speech Pathology accepts Medicare, Highmark, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Univera and Independent Health. We currently do not have a waiting-list and would be happy to help you determine if your services will be covered by insurance.

If you are outside of the WNY area; most insurance cards will have their phone number listed on the back. You can call and ask for a list of providers in your area!

Speech Language Pathologists focus on more than just speech! When most people think of speech therapy they pictures a child who needs help with pronouncing sounds or an adult who just had a stroke. While SLPs DO treat these populations, we also treat so much more!

Here are some of the “non-speech” areas that Back 2 You Speech Language Pathology can help you:

Swallowing (Dysphagia)- Common signs and symptoms associated with swallowing disorders include pain when swallowing, coughing or throat clearing while eating or drinking, hoarse or "wet" vocal quality after eating or drinking, feeling like something is stuck in the throat, difficulty chewing food, and/or avoiding certain foods.

Cognitive- Communication- Targets cognitive processes such as memory, multi-tasking, attention and managing daily living tasks.

Aphasia- a language disorder that is caused by neurological damage and may make it difficult for you to understand, speak, read, or write.

Dysphonia (Voice Disorder)- Signs of a voice disorder include a hoarse voice, difficulty increasing volume, feeling fatigued after continued voice use, or unwanted voice changes related to progressive neurological disorders or vocal fold pathologies.

Childhood LANGUAGE delays- Children may demonstrate difficulty understanding (receptive language) or expressing (expressive language). This can relate to wants/needs, following directions, vocabulary, and grammar.

If you are in the Buffalo area and are having difficulty with your speech or any of the above-mentioned areas, reach out today!

ANSWER:
While beginning speech therapy as early as possible is always recommended in order to implement the best compensatory strategies/implementing exercises using neuroplasticity, there is always hope. Whether you are an adult who has experienced a communication/speech impairment since childhood, a new Mom with a young child having difficulty with speech/feeding/swallowing or someone who is months/years post CVA.
QUESTION:
What are some diagnoses that people tend to “wait and see” before reaching out for speech therapy services?
ANSWER:
Voice changes: if you have experiences vocal changes that have lasted more than 2 weeks, it is recommended that you seek a speech-language pathologist who has experience treating dysphonia.

Progressive Neurological Disorders: The nature of these diseases/disorders is to progress at vary levels of severity. A speech-language pathologist can help to implement early routines and exercises to improve overall communication, reduce risk of aspiration with food/liquid intake and help to facilitate memory to improve quality of life and reduce the risk of hospitalization.

Swallowing Changes: A speech-language pathologist can provide you with an expansive amount of education regarding dysphagia and how to avoid aspiration and possible associated pneumonia through aspiration precautions, compensatory strategies and oral/pharyngeal swallowing exercises. Contacting your physician and requesting a referral to a speech-language pathologist could help to prevent aspiration associated pneumonia and hospitalization.

Stroke: While most people who have suffered a CVA receive services while in the hospital and for a time in-home they often have difficulty finding continued speech therapy after their initial few weeks/months of treatment. Outpatient speech therapy is a great option for continued treatment and has been to be effective even for someone who is years post-stroke
