We had our first Arizona storm yesterday and it came on fast and furious!

Needless to say, we were caught by surprise but luckily not too far from home 🏠

The water came gushing down and I was amazed at how quickly the scenery changed in the typically dry desert conditions.

The moment really had me thinking about how quickly these back pain episodes can come on ,

And how it can be so hard to know that there will be an end to it, especially when you were in the middle of the storm.

If this is you today, I want you to know that there will be an end and that this doesn’t have to be the “new normal”.

No bending, lifting, or twisting is a pretty standard set of precautions used after back surgery… 😬

Sciatica & disc herniation affect a lot of people unfortunately

This usually causes a tight and painful feeling across the lower back

and can even go into the glute and down the leg 🦵

The further down the leg the symptoms travel typically the worse the injury is.

Because of that “tight” feeling, most people think that stretching those “tight” areas is what the need for pain relief 😫

However, bending forward and stretching irritated nerves can cause even more pain ⚡️

No fun 😢

Here are a couple things you can do immediately to help with pain that are not stretching.

1️⃣ Discover whether you respond to extension or neutral movement patterns

2️⃣ Learn spinal hygiene to help yourself through the acute phase

Once your movement opens up and pin calms down we can return to flexing the spine.

This gives the disc time to heal so that the rest of your rehab can progress smoothly.

I’ve had a few friends suffering with shoulder pain recently so bringing back this gem 💎

The rotator cuff is made up of 4 muscles 💪

That all attach to the shoulder blade.

These muscles control the way the upper arm bone moves within the socket.

Training these muscles to stay in control through various motions can help your strength and pain.

Hip hinging is one of the hardest moves to master from a physical and psychological standpoint.

I like to use the cue of a dowel to maintain a neutral spine

While also cueing for TA and glute engagement.

My buddy David is on a journey to play catch 366 days in a row using the activity to connect on a deeper level with people, young and old. David and I initially connected as he was trying to work out some of the kinks from using those muscles and joints so consistently where it was causing him pain.
I was immediately drawn to his energy and of course the goal.

About four months later, we finally got to have our game of catch and it was epic! As we started to throw and connect, the snow, looks like a snow globe out of a movie. Shortly into our game, the snow started to pick up and go sideways. As the saying goes, if you don’t like the weather, wait a minute.

It’s been a true honor getting to know David and helping him continue his journey of Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your journey!

As a traveling physical therapist I have seen the healthcare system work and fall apart all over the country.
