Kendra Elliott, Director of Compeer International, attended the Nonprofit Coalition meeting at the The Osceola Chamber with Congressman Darren Soto’s office. The roundtable focused on the current climate of federal funding for nonprofits. State Rep. Jose Alvarez was also in attendance and provided updates from the state level.

This week, Compeer International is proud to recognize Compeer of Livingston County as our Affiliate of the Week! Since it was founded, Compeer of Livingston has been a shining example of what it means to foster hope, healing, and connection through the power of friendship. 💚

Over many years, the team in Livingston County has built a strong network of volunteers and community partners who support individuals on their mental wellness journeys. Whether it’s one-to-one matches, group outings, or community events, their work consistently reminds us that meaningful relationships make all the difference.

🌟 Affiliate of the Week: Compeer Rochester 🌟

Compeer Rochester began in 1973 as the “Adopt‑A‑Patient” program at the Rochester Psychiatric Center. In 1977, under the vision of Bernice “Bunny” Skirboll, that grassroots mentoring initiative officially became Compeer (Companion + Peer), transforming the landscape of mental health support in our community through intentional friendship and social connection.

Over the ensuing decades, Compeer Rochester pioneered the Compeer model, expanding statewide in the early 1980s and helping catalyze the growth of Compeer International, the global network that now spans the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the U.K.

Today, Compeer Rochester continues Bunny Skirboll’s legacy through innovative and inclusive programming:

💙Adult and Youth Supportive Friendships—one-to-one peer matches that foster meaningful, recovery‑focused connections;

💚CompeerCORPS—veteran-to-veteran peer support launched in partnership with Veteran Services;

💙Compeer Calling and E‑Buddies—telephone and email match options to reach folks awaiting in-person connections.

Especially noteworthy: the Compeer model has been recognized as a Best Practice for recovery by the APA in 2005 and designated as an evidence-based model by SAMHSA and NREPP in 2013.

By lifting the stigma around mental health and bridging isolation with friendship, Compeer Rochester continues to change lives—creating authentic connection and hope across Monroe County and beyond.
