Did you hear? History was made again in Buffalo! 🧠

Dr. Adnan Siddiqui and the team at UB Neurosurgery, in collaboration with the Jacobs Institute, successfully completed the world’s first robotic microsurgical intracranial brain surgeries using the Symani® Surgical System (MMI - Medical Microinstruments).

This breakthrough marks a major step forward in neurosurgery, pushing the boundaries of precision, safety, and what’s possible for patients with complex conditions like Disease.

Dr. Siddiqui shared: “We're very excited to announce the first in-man open brain microsurgery using Symani Robot by MMI. The study was designed by the Jacobs Institute, and led by the UB Neurosurgery team. Real-life example of how science, innovation, and collaboration come together to help patients.”

For a long time, alcohol was framed as “safe in moderation.” That conversation is shifting.

Recent reports, including from the National Academies and the U.S. Surgeon General, reinforce what researchers have known for years: alcohol is directly linked to increased cancer risk.

What the data shows:
• Alcohol is associated with at least 7 types of cancer
• Risk increases along a spectrum, not just with heavy use
• Even low to moderate intake is linked to a small but measurable increase in risk
• For breast cancer in particular, the relationship is linear: more alcohol, higher risk

And globally, guidance is becoming more direct: There is no amount of alcohol that is completely risk-free.

What matters most is understanding that risk and making informed decisions.

What this means for your health:
• Small changes, like reducing or stopping alcohol, can lower risk for certain cancers
• Risk isn’t all-or-nothing, it’s cumulative over time
• Awareness allows for better, more intentional choices

Black Maternal Health Week is a moment to talk about what the data actually shows, and what we do about it.

In the U.S., Black women face significantly higher rates of maternal mortality and severe complications during pregnancy and postpartum. This persists across income, education, and access levels.

This is not about genetics. It’s about gaps in care.

What contributes to this disparity:
• Delayed recognition of symptoms
• Differences in how pain and concerns are taken seriously
• Access to consistent, high-quality prenatal and postpartum care
• Higher rates of chronic conditions that go under-managed

What this looks like in practice:
• Taking every symptom seriously and acting on it early
• Creating consistency in care, so decisions aren’t left to chance
• Watching more closely when risk is higher
• Staying connected after delivery, when many complications actually happen

Tremor is one of the most recognized symptoms of Parkinson’s disease — but it’s not always the first sign.

Parkinson’s is a neurological condition that often begins with subtle changes, including stiffness, slowed movement, balance issues, and even sleep or mood shifts.

Because these signs can be easy to overlook, awareness is key.

Recognizing early changes can help patients seek evaluation sooner and better understand their symptoms.

This World Parkinson’s Day, we’re sharing what often goes unnoticed.

And most of the time, those needs are spread across different places, different systems, and different experiences.

UBMD brings it together.

From early years to later stages of life, our physicians work across specialties to support the full picture, not just one moment in time.

Truly ONE source for the life you lead.

On World Health Day, we want to share our commitment to a healthy Western New York and beyond. 🌎💙

March is Endometriosis Awareness Month, a time to bring awareness on a condition that affects an estimated 1 in 10 women, yet very often goes undiagnosed for years.

Many symptoms of endometriosis are commonly dismissed as “just part of having a period.” But persistent or severe symptoms may be a sign that something more is going on.

If symptoms like these are interfering with your quality of life, it’s important to speak with a healthcare provider.

What if healthier food choices were already waiting in your grocery cart? 🛒🥦🍓

Researchers at the Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences - University at Buffalo tested a simple idea:

Provide families with healthy recipes and preload their online grocery carts with the ingredients needed to make them.

The result?

Families who received the preloaded carts purchased significantly MORE nutritious foods than those who received recipes alone.

When healthy options are easier and more automatic, families are more likely to choose them.
