If someone you love has had a brain aneurysm—or you’ve ever worried about your own risk—you’re not alone.

Right now, doctors don’t have a reliable way to tell who is most at risk of rupture, but that’s about to change.👇

UBNS and Atlas Ambulatory Neurosurgery Center™ (ANSC™) just received a major grant to create the first-ever personalized risk tool for rupture, powered by AI and real patient data.

An estimated 6.5 million Americans (1 in 50) live with an unruptured brain aneurysm. Women are disproportionately affected, and the risk triples when a first-degree relative has had one. A rupture is fatal in 50% of cases.

No diagnostic tools exist to determine risk based on biological data. This project seeks to change that.

👉🏼 “This isn’t just research—it’s a movement to finally answer the question every family member of an aneurysm patient asks: ‘Am I at risk?’” —Dr. Elad Levy, Chair of at .

This effort is deeply personal. It’s inspired by Missy Magel, who passed away suddenly at just 12 years old from a brain aneurysm. Now, her family and a global team of doctors, scientists, and tech experts are turning heartbreak into hope for so many.

The Missy Project

We're excited to share some new research Dr. Adnan Siddiqui and others are working on with ihtObtura®, a novel liquid embolic agent designed to improve curative outcomes for patients with brain AVMs.

This first-in-human study, published in the American Journal of Neuroradiology, highlights ihtObtura®’s unique property—progressive loss of radiopacity—which allows for greater anatomical clarity during staged interventions.

Among patients who completed treatment, 93% achieved complete occlusion, with promising safety and efficacy results across the broader cohort.

This innovation reflects UBNS’s unwavering commitment to advancing neurovascular care through research, collaboration, and leading-edge treatment.

Can turning your head affect how we measure pressure inside the brain?

In this multicenter study, Dr. Adnan Siddiqui and the UBNS team, along with neurosurgical collaborators, found that head rotation can cause jugular vein narrowing, which significantly increases lumbar puncture opening pressure in patients with suspected cerebral venous outflow disorder.

These results highlight the need to consider head positioning during pressure measurements to avoid misinterpretation in conditions like IIH.

A new study led by UBNS neurosurgeons suggests that statins — the same medication many people take for cholesterol — may also lower the chances of a brain aneurysm coming back after it's been treated with coiling.

“Statin use was associated with a reduced rate of aneurysm recurrence,” said Dr. Elad Levy.

Dr. Adnan Siddiqui added, “Statins are a relatively low-risk treatment and may be an effective therapy to reduce the chances of aneurysms reopening.”

The research found that patients on statins were less likely to experience recurrence — a promising step forward for long-term recovery.

In stroke care, every second counts.

A new multi-center study — including UB Neurosurgery — highlights how a next-generation device may help doctors treat strokes faster and more safely.

The Cereglide catheter is a new tool used during thrombectomy (a procedure to remove blood clots). In the study, it helped restore blood flow in 88% of patients and showed no serious complications like vessel injury or brain bleeding.

For patients with large vessel strokes, this could mean:
✔️ Faster care
✔️ Fewer risks
✔️ Better outcomes

Published in the Journal of NeuroInterventional Surgery, these results show real promise for improving how we treat stroke.
