Visiting Nursing Association of WNY (VNA)

Visiting Nursing Association of WNY (VNA) The Visiting Nursing Association of Western New York is the largest home health agency in Western New York. Tuberculosis was the greatest killer of adults.

We service over 27,000 patients annually with over 530,000 home visits from Williamsville to Wellsville, Boston to Youngstown. "In 1885, Elizabeth Coe Marshall, a Sunday school teacher at the First Presbyterian Church in Buffalo, New York, collected funds to hire a nurse to provide free nursing among the sick poor in the City of Buffalo…thus began the practice of nurses traveling to the homes of t

he sick, recuperating, and disabled Americans."
- Smithsonian Institute

In 1885, about 75% of America’s 50 million people lived on farms or in rural hamlets. Other common diseases in that period included bronchitis, rheumatism, kidney and circulatory ailments, malaria, syphilis, and small pox. Life expectancy was around 40. Medical science had just discovered that certain bacteria could cause human disease. The hospital system was in its infancy, with less than 700 in the entire country. Physicians were normally generalists who treated the entire family. Nurses in the area trained at the Buffalo General School of Nursing, which was founded in 1877. They also provided care in people’s homes—for those who could afford to pay for it. Elizabeth Coe Marshall thought that home care should be provided for all, regardless of their ability to pay, and created the vision of a non-profit organization dedicated to that concept. Elizabeth got the idea after she was ill as a result of an accident, and care was provided by a nurse in her home. Elizabeth approached her church, the First Presbyterian, for some monetary support to get started. Funds left over from a memorial fund set up for the son of the pastor were used to pay for the services of the first visiting nurse. She hired Mary Taylor as the first visiting nurse, fresh from graduation from the Buffalo General School. Elizabeth Coe Marshall died just a few years later, in 1892, but by that time the VNA of Western New York was firmly established.

“It's mosquito season. Prevent bites, itching and the spread of diseases with these simple precautions.
• Choose bug sprays that contain 25-30% DEET
• Limit outdoor activities at dusk and dawn
• Eliminate standing water where possible. Mosquitos breed in stagnant or standing water
• Consider natural deterrents such as citronella candles, outdoor fans and mosquito-repelling plants like lavender, basil, mint and marigolds

Is the VNA hiring physical therapists?

“Our teams are growing, and there are openings for physical therapists in our Erie, Niagara, and Genesee county branches. In addition to our fantastic nursing services, these services aid patient recovery in the comfort and privacy of a patient’s home rather than in a rehabilitation facility. Clinicians can apply today via our website, WWW.VNAWNY.ORG/CAREERS.” Adrian Mudd, senior talent acquisition partner.

* Loosen clothing.
* Use cold, wet cloths on your body or take a cool bath

One-on-one care can be especially valuable for men who have chronic conditions or are recovering from an illness. Ben Logsdon RN, manager of infusion services at the VNA explains.

“Home care gives us the chance to focus solely on the patient in front of us,” he shared. "By working directly in the patient’s home, nurses are better able to tailor treatments, apply treatments like infusion therapy, monitor progress and build meaningful relationships that support long-term health."

This Men’s Health Month, William Choinski Jr., a physical therapist, explains how home care supports male patients recovering from joint replacement surgeries.

"Home care allows patients to begin recovery in a familiar environment, where therapy is tailored to their surroundings and daily routines. Teaching someone how to take a step with a new prosthetic can be scary”, he said, “We’re there to help patients regain confidence and independence safely at their own pace.”
