Every person in the JFS Buffalo service area coping with significant life challenge or personal change.

We are a multifaceted agency offering a broad range of complementary, integrated services delivered by highly qualified professionals in psychiatry, psychology, nursing, social work and rehabilitation counseling; committed volunteers and community contributors. Our services are available to all individuals – from infants, children and adolescents to families and the frail elderly – regardless of religious affiliation, ethnicity, race, culture, gender or ability to pay. Our compassionate health care and social service professionals administer comprehensive programs that offer comfort, counseling and connection to a broad network of support. In every service area – from elder care to refugee resettlement to behavioral and physical health – JFS focuses on client-directed treatment of the whole self. We are guided by the essential connection between mental well-being, physical wellness and positive self worth.

Our development team cultivates relationships with supporters of Jewish Family Services, ensuring they feel connected with our mission and our programming. As with other programming, 2024 presented new and unique challenges for this department, and they rose to the occasion to meet needs across the board.

Janelle is passionate about her work at JFS because she gets to help seniors thrive in our complex modern environment. In her day-to-day role as the Jewish Federation Apartment Service Coordinator, Janelle links them with services that they need including transportation, health insurance, enrolling in benefits, or even finding a care aid. She also communicates with residents families, runs discussion groups for residents, and organizes building activities!

“As the world around us constantly changes and becomes seemingly more complicated and bureaucratic, I find my job here to be more important than ever. Because the apartments at JFS are subsidized housing, a majority of the residents are eligible for benefits such as HEAP, SNAP, and Medicaid. The process of applying for benefits and understanding them can be challenging at times. I have often wondered how the average low income older adult in the community could navigate the various systems we have in place to access benefits and services without the assistance of a social worker or family member”.

Our licensed clinicians utilize their expertise and ongoing, specialized training to address trauma, eating disorders, problem gambling, depression, anxiety, grief, and other issues related to emotional well-being.

Care Coordination & Navigation programming at JFS includes our Adult Health Home, Children’s Health Home, Social Navigation, and Housing Navigation programming. Care coordinators and Social Care Navigators work tirelessly to make navigating medical and social services less overwhelming for our clients. They act as an added layer of support between a client and other offices, assisting with scheduling appointments and coordinating care between different parties.

Many thanks to the group from Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart who spent time learning about JFS’ work, writing letters to Holocaust survivors, and painting motivational rocks for community members. Every small action counts towards making a difference in our community- we can all be mensches!

It’s in our name- JFS is here for the Buffalo Jewish community. In 2024, our Jewish Community Services programs supported Holocaust Survivors, counseled Jewish families, and assisted older populations living in Jewish Federation apartments. As we look to the future, this programming will continue to support Jewish Buffalo and the members of our community who need it most through care coordination, counseling and therapy, and meaningful programming for seniors and families.
