While the documented medical benefits of breastfeeding are enormous, solely sharing this data doesn’t always help people on their journey. They need support. From their midwives, physicians, doulas, lactation consultants, and the examples and the visual stories they see around them. This is why we commissioned Julia Bottoms to paint such a beautiful and honoring portrait of this natural phenomenon, life-giving ritual and form of connection.
During our unveiling on January 24, 2025, we built on this desire to honor breastfeeding in a way that would really see and applaud those on this journey and inspire others.
We need to see more people breastfeeding in everyday life. At the park, on the bus, at the airport, in the museum, and with friends and family. We need photos of the walls of our home that celebrate this milestone along with so many others.
So we made some. We invited and Kaitlyn Lowe .galatic.griot to document anyone who signed up. We had two-week-olds, one-month-olds, three-month-olds, six-months-olds, ten-month-olds, sixteen-months-old and blissful mothers. Some brought their whole family. What do you think?
One shared that with her first child nursing was really difficult in part because of the information she encountered was more prescriptive - hours and qualities based - than was helpful. With her second, it didn’t take five months to feel comfortable, only three days.
As commissioning curator Claire Schneider of says: “The stories we tell, the things we see, the images we make and revere do affect us. I would argue they even affect our health outcomes.” She continues. “I went searching for them during my own pregnancy and found a few amazing documentaries, but very little in the visual arts realm. So grateful to be able to help be a part of a recent tide of artists and curators shifting this.”
We are too.
