Welcome to the Quarter Deck…

Typically, the quarterdeck serves as the part of the upper deck of a ship reserved for officers. Navy, this area is reserved for official ceremonies and as the station of the officer of the deck in port. Throughout history, the quarterdeck has been used to carry out exercise and – sometimes – punishments. At Quarter Deck Athletics, home of CrossFit QDA, we are gratefu

l for the opportunities afforded to us and the sacrifices that have been made to allow us the freedoms we so enjoy. With multiple family members serving in various branches of the armed forces, a military lifestyle is something with which we grew up and has become an integral part of our lives. We honor fallen soldiers regularly through special “hero workouts,” and we will be working closely with veterans as a part of our community outreach and charitable work. It is not something we take lightly. It comes with the utmost respect, sincerity, and appreciation. Here at QDA, everyone is equal. We are all equally important and equally treated with equal expectations. And that expectation is simple: Effort. That is it. Success is a simple formula: Your best effort, consistently performed, over many days. Progress happens every single day but in small amounts. It is the aggregation of marginal gains, day in and day out. QDA is the only gym in downtown Buffalo, offering CrossFit, chiropractic, and nutrition services for all ages and abilities, and, as such, we are able to measure effort like no other fitness facility or gym. Our fitness and medical backgrounds allow us to offer safe, effective, and intense workouts that can be scaled for all skill levels. As such, we have worked with all populations – from children to retirees, professional athletes to cancer patients, as well as those with joint replacements, and hip and shoulder problems. We have seen it all. Whether you want to be able to perform everyday movements pain-free, such as walking or getting out of a chair, or you’d like to lose weight and/or build muscle, we can tailor every workout to fit your needs to keep you healthy and progressing towards your goals. Reflecting on the Open and Quarterfinals from this year I was excited.

I was excited for the work and effort by everyone.

I was excited for those who advanced.

I was excited for the group environment.

Some of my favorite times in CrossFit was when we almost sent a team to Regionals two years in a row. We were extremely close but never made it over the hump.

Instead, two years in a row we were able to send two athletes to regionals as individual competitors.

It is one of many high points for me as a coach.

I love to compete and I think it’s important because of what it reveals. I think it reveals a tremendous amount about our preparation, character, progress, and it really shows us what we are capable of.

This year, we qualified 8 individuals to advance to quarterfinals. That is a good amount for how small our gym is.

We will have one of those athletes advance to semifinals.

Next year I want to double our numbers.

I want to qualify at least 16 people to quarters and at least 2 people to semis.

Why?

First and foremost because we can. I firmly believe in what we do to not only make people healthier, more fit, and capable but also because we have had multiple people that qualified who workout once a day 5-6 days a week at QDA.

Personally I only take class, 6 days a week. Thats it. It works.

I want to challenge all of you. I believe 16 is a low number. I counted quickly in my head how many people I thought could get there and make it and I got to 20 people pretty quickly.

Maybe you cannot do it in the next 12 months, but what everyone of us can absolutely do it commit to ourselves.

A year ago I had a very honest conversation with someone who was talking about how they thought they should be better… they believed they were committed and attended enough classes to get there.

I called them out, counted their attendance and it was found to be lacking. Not a lot but it was closer to 3.5-4 times a week versus 5-6. That adds up!

It adds up a lot over the course of months and becomes almost exponential over years.

Commit to attending consistently and regularly(plug the new app and the committed club starting tomorrow).
