Austin Air

Austin Air Clinically proven HEPA and activated carbon air purifiers with a 5-year filter life. Austin Air has been improving indoor air quality since 1990. Why us? No bias.

The way we live is changing. As we spend more time at home, the need for clean air, free from contaminants has never been more important. Here at Austin Air, we understand that choosing the right air purifier, to protect you and your family, is a big decision. You can’t see indoor pollutants and you can’t see airborne viruses. You need to know the air purifier you choose will protect you and your loved ones, without you even knowing it. So, the big question is Why Austin? We are the only air purifier proven to remove pollutants in independent clinical trials. Carried out by leading university hospitals. We had no involvement in the trials. No influence. In government tests we outperformed over 100 other air purifiers. This led to work with FEMA and the American Red Cross during some of America’s most challenging times, including 9-11, Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, and the 2015 SolCal gas leak in California. We are the only air purifier with a 5-year filter life. No other air purifier comes close to this. No expensive filter changes, just plug your Austin in and let it run. We are the only air purifier using 60 sq. ft. of True Medical Grade HEPA. There are lots of air purifiers using Medical Grade HEPA. But it’s only a fraction of the HEPA that we use. This ensures a long filter life and the effective removal of viruses*, bacteria and allergens. We are the only air purifier to use 780 cubic inches of Activated Carbon. Activated Carbon can also be found in lots of other air purifiers. But nothing close to 780 cubic inches. This guarantees your home will be free from chemicals and VOC’s. We are the only air purifier constructed using solid steel and a non-toxic powder coated paint. No plastic, no polystyrene, no off gassing. This year we celebrate 30 years of clean air. 30 years of protecting our customers. 30 years of ensuring the air you breathe is clean, safe and free from contaminants. For more information, contact us today to learn more about our units and how we can help protect you and your family.

*Covid-19 is a new strain of virus that as yet, remains untested. However, the Medical Grade HEPA technology used in our filters is proven to remove up to 95% of all airborne contaminants as small as 0.1 microns.

It’s time to announce the Austin Air Dealer of the Month for March!

Please join us in celebrating Wilks Air, with special appreciation for company Vice President Keith Wilks!

Keeping homes comfortable in San Antonio for over 50 years, Wilks Air Conditioning & Heating is known for worry-free AC and heating service — but their commitment goes far beyond temperature control.

They understand something essential: comfort isn’t just about how warm or cool a home feels. It’s about the air you breathe.

Keith and his team take a comprehensive approach to indoor air quality, starting with duct cleaning and HVAC optimization. They help homeowners evaluate the whole environment — checking for leaking ductwork, improper system sizing, and other hidden issues that can impact health and comfort.

And as proponents of portable air purification, they’ve partnered with Austin Air Systems to offer Medical Grade HEPA technology combined with robust activated carbon filtration — a powerful supplement to a properly functioning HVAC system.

Wilks Air is a perfect example of something we love to highlight: Being an Austin Air dealer isn’t just for doctors and clinicians. It’s for HVAC professionals. It’s for contractors. It’s for wellness advocates. It’s for anyone who wants to help people breathe better at home, at school, at work.

Indoor air quality touches every profession that serves people — and Keith Wilks and his team at Wilks Air Conditioning & Heating demonstrate that beautifully.

Thank you, Wilks Air Conditioning & Heating, for helping your community breathe easier. 💙

It’s a nightmare scenario and it could happen to YOU…

A skunk sprays near your house and the smell won’t quit.

Skunk spray isn’t just repulsive, it’s also oily and sticks to anything it touches. It’s so persistent, it lingers like it pays rent. For many people, it’s the ultimate air quality horror story.

But wouldn’t you know? Skunk spray is no match for an Austin Air purifier! Laurie H. found this out for herself.

“A skunk got under my house yesterday. There is no basement under my bedroom. My room smelled awful, I mean unbearably awful. I put the air purifier in my room and let it run on high all night. To my amazement it took the smell completely out of my room.”

Completely. Out. One night on high was enough.

Austin Air purifiers have been carefully engineered to tackle a wide range of air quality issues. Wildfire smoke. Allergens. VOCs. Everyday indoor pollution. But we rarely have the opportunity to test the performance of Austin Air purifiers like Laurie’s skunk situation.

We’re slightly biased but we’re not surprised our unit was up to this extreme odor challenge. Add Austin Air purifiers to your home to prepare for any air quality issues that might come your way!

Some places just come with… personality. And by personality, we mean air quality challenges.

If you know anything about Southern California, you know what we’re talking about — smog that settles in, wildfire smoke that drifts for miles, and air that doesn’t always feel as fresh as it looks on the forecast.

Michelle B. has been navigating the issues of Los Angeles with the help of Austin Air since 1997. What started as one HealthMate purchase has turned into a decades-long clean air strategy with three units.

Nearly 30 years later… her original unit is still running. It has protected her home from smog, wildfire smoke, and now desert dust after moving to La Quinta.

She told us her Austin Air units are the last thing packed and the first thing unpacked when they move. (Honestly, we felt that.)

And here’s the part that really hits: In a world of short-lived electronics and constant replacements, she changes her filter every five years — and keeps going. No burnout. No maintenance fatigue. Just steady, reliable protection.

Michelle’s story is such a good reminder: clean air isn’t a one-time purchase. It’s a long-term commitment to your home, your lungs, and your peace of mind.

From the Austin Air Archives… 📷

As part of our 35th anniversary celebration, we’re digging into three and a half decades of history and sharing moments from our journey.

This week’s Throwback takes us back to one of our boldest ads — featuring a very cranky-looking gentleman and one unforgettable headline:

“Think you’re a tough customer? Try satisfying Homeland Security, FEMA, Army Corps of Engineers, and 125,000 residents of Anniston, Alabama.”

Here’s the story behind it: An early test commissioned by the United States Army Soldier Biological Chemical Command evaluated commercially available portable air cleaners for their ability to reduce contaminant v***r in a sealed room. In that study of more than 100 units, the Austin Air HealthMate ranked the most effective unit tested.

Later, following the collapse of the World Trade Center, Manhattan residents faced heavy dust and airborne contaminants, including asbestos-laden debris. Austin Air units equipped with true HEPA filtration were distributed by the Red Cross and FEMA to help protect New Yorkers.

A few years later, Austin Air was needed for another serious hazard. This time was during the destruction of chemical weapon stockpiles in Anniston, Alabama. It was the first time toxic nerve agents like sarin were incinerated so close to a populated area — and precautions were taken seriously.

Residents who lived closest to the incinerator were provided with a special order, limited edition Austin Air purifier.

These events demonstrate that before COVID reshaped the global conversation about indoor air quality, Austin Air could be trusted on a large scale, against the toughest pollutants.

Part of being a legacy brand in the air purifier space means Austin Air has been rigorously tested for decades — not just by customers, but by government agencies tasked with protecting public health. It means stepping up when the air is uncertain and the need is urgent.

Over two decades later, some customers are still using units from those very days. Austin Air: 35 years of clean air, craftsmanship, and care

LET’S ALL EAT RIGHT… DAY! 🥕🍎

Today we recognize “Let’s All Eat Right Day,” observed each year on February 25 in honor of nutrition pioneer Adelle Davis.

Born in 1904, Davis was one of the first widely known voices to warn against heavily processed foods and artificial additives — long before “whole foods” became a household phrase.

Her message was simple but powerful: The food we eat shapes our health.

While nutrition science has evolved significantly since her time, one idea she championed remains central today: choosing foods as close to their natural state as possible.

So today is a gentle invitation to pause and ask: What are we really putting on our plates?

Because “whole foods” isn’t just the name of a grocery store. It’s a way of eating — and living — with intention.

At Austin Air, we are constantly beating the drum that health is built through a variety of daily habits. Clean air is a powerful foundation but it’s not the only element — the food we eat, our levels of activity, and sleep habits are also very important.

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s awareness. Let’s build a healthier tomorrow, one meal (and one breath) at a time.

Let us know: Do you shop the perimeter? What tips or tricks support your healthy eating habits?

🎉 FUN FACTS FOR FEBRUARY!

Today, February 24, 2026, we’re celebrating the birthday of Austin Air founder Richard Taylor. He would have been 81.

So it feels only right to close out this series by heading back to where his story began: Creighton Mine, Ontario… a place that is no longer on the map.

Literally. It’s a ghost town, no buildings remain.

Opened in 1900, Creighton Mine became one of the most significant nickel mines in the world. It was about 4.25 hours northwest of Toronto, near Lake Huron. In true company town fashion, it was built around the mine. At its height, about 2,200 people lived there.

In 1986, the corporation that owned the mine and town announced to residents that they had two years to find somewhere else to live. By 1988, the town had been bulldozed. Nothing is left but cellars and building foundations.

You might think of the “American West” when you hear “ghost town” but over the last century, Northern Ontario has had many mining towns vanish in boom and bust fashion.

But here’s what makes Creighton different from many others: although it’s not a formal municipality anymore, it hasn’t faded away completely. Former residents, who call themselves “Creightonites,” still hold reunions to keep the spirit of the community alive long after the buildings disappeared.

How many people do you know whose hometown is now a real-life ghost town?

Richard Taylor’s life began in a place defined by grit, industry, and loyalty. If you’ve been following our 35th anniversary posts, that origin story probably feels fitting.

Have you ever visited a ghost town? 👻 Tell us where.

Your office may look clean. But what about the air?

Airborne irritants like perfumes, colognes, and VOCs can build up in shared spaces. For those with respiratory conditions like asthma and COPD, that exposure isn’t just unpleasant — it can trigger an attack or wheezing.

The Austin Air HealthMate Plus is engineered to address gaseous chemicals, smoke, and odors. In addition to 60 square feet of HEPA to capture particles, the HealthMate Plus has a powerful blend of activated carbon and zeolite impregnated with potassium iodide — quickly clearing the air when you turn it up, and practically silent when set on low.

Here is what one happy customer shared: “I like the HealthMate Plus. I put it in my office. So many clients come in smelling of scented products. It cleans it out of the air quickly on a higher speed. Most of the time I keep it on low and it is whisper quiet.” — Anne R.

Are chemical laden fragrances from colleagues or customers making you feel sick at work?

HARD TRUTH: The air you’ve been breathing impacts your brain health.

A new study followed 27.8 million Americans over 18 years found that long-term exposure to fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) was associated with an 8.5% higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

The scale of the dataset makes these findings difficult to dismiss as statistical noise.

Importantly: this wasn’t extreme smog versus pristine air. It was the kind of difference many communities experience based on traffic density, regional industry, wildfire smoke, and geography.

As wildfire seasons lengthen and urban density increases, the conversation around long-term cumulative exposure becomes more relevant.

Air quality is not abstract. It is a daily exposure — and indoor environments play a central role.

From the Austin Air Archives… 📷

As part of our 35th anniversary celebration, we’re digging into three and a half decades of history and sharing moments that helped shape who we are today.

This action shot dates back to the early 1990s (around 1994) and features two of the major pillars of Austin Air — Joyce and Dana — alongside our founder, Richard.

We’re proud card-carrying members of the Richard Taylor Fan Club so we’re always happy to spotlight him but we’d be remiss if we didn’t make it clear — from the very beginning, Austin Air has been a collaborative environment.

Joyce and Dana were instrumental in those early years, helping transform a bold idea into a growing company with real staying power. The spirit you see in this photo — heads together, reviewing, refining, problem-solving — wasn’t staged. It was (and still is) how we operate.

Thirty-five years later, that ethos remains unchanged. We believe the best ideas are built together. Whether we’re designing filtration systems, refining manufacturing processes, or supporting customers, Austin Air has always taken a team approach.

Austin Air: 35 years of clean air, craftsmanship, and care… plus plenty of collaboration!

Our Story

In the late 1970’s, the founder of Austin Air began his mission to improve respiratory health. He realized that the quality of the air we breathe had a direct impact on us. By improving the air in our environment, he knew that he would improve the quality of our lives. At that time, household air cleaners were designed for cosmetic cleaning and were only equipped to remove visible dust from the air. However, it is the tiniest particles and gases, invisible to the naked eye, that are responsible for most asthma attacks and allergic reactions. There was nothing available that was even close to being able to remove contaminants of this size. Starting from scratch, we looked beyond what was already being used. We focused our research on the substances that were being used to filter out the tiniest particles for other purposes. Our search led us to the Centre for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia. We found that high-efficiency particulate air filters (HEPA filters) were being used in laboratories and clean rooms to keep harmful microorganisms from spreading to other parts of the building and out into public spaces. We knew that by developing a smaller-scale version of the HEPA filter, we were on our way to finding a solution. We then continued our search to find a substance that would remove gas molecules from the air. This led us to the U.S. army, where we learned about the effectiveness of activated carbon in gas masks. We had found the answer, the activated carbon, together with the HEPA filter was used to develop the world’s first high efficiency domestic air cleaner, the Austin Healthmate™. Effectively removing dust, particles and molecular gases, the Austin Healthmate ™ remains the gold standard air cleaner, to which all other air cleaners are compared. Over the years, our on-going research has kept us in close communication with respiratory experts and the medical community. We are frequently learning of new ways to help more diverse groups of people. It was our work with Dr. Doris Rapp, an internationally renowned expert in child allergies and best-selling author that resulted in the Healthmate Plus™, designed to help the chemically sensitive. The expertise and guidance of a renowned pulmonary specialist working in one of the country’s leading University Medical Centres was essential in the development of what would become known as the National Sleep Foundation Bedroom Machine™. A machine designed to treat those suffering from sleep related problems such as sleep apnoea and insomnia. This brings us to where we are today. After many years of working closely with members of the medical community, the US military and organisations such as the Centre for Disease Control, we have found new ways to develop and perfect our products. It has been this commitment to constantly improving our air cleaners that makes Austin Air a market leader. Our products are now sold in over 130 countries around the world, despite never having advertised nationally or internationally. Austin Air has built its business solely on personal recommendations and word-of-mouth success stories. It is our goal that one day, all those suffering from chronic respiratory illness will breathe a sigh of relief, effortlessly.
