May is Mental Health Awareness Month and, in our community, this conversation matters more than ever.

For too long, we’ve been told to be strong, stay silent, or push through. However, real strength is checking in with yourself, asking for help, and healing out loud. Mental health is just as important as physical health. Stress, trauma, anxiety, and depression are real, and you don’t have to face them alone.

Let’s break the stigma, support one another, and make space for rest, healing, and honest conversations. If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out. Talk to someone you trust. Our community deserves care, compassion, and access to support.

Don't wait, give BestSelf a call at 716-884-0888.

Sexual assault awareness and prevention is about more than recognizing harm. It includes understanding the systems and risk factors that allow violence to happen, and how different forms of violence are often connected. One of those connections is the link between sexual violence and gun violence.

Click through the graphics to learn more about how the two are intertwined.

Prevention is not just about responding after harm occurs—it’s about creating environments where harm is less likely to happen in the first place. When we connect the dots between sexual assault and gun violence, we can build more informed, effective strategies that center safety, dignity, and long-term change. Everyone deserves to feel safe and live free from violence, in their relationships, homes, and communities.

Financial literacy isn’t just about money—it’s about opportunity, stability, and safety. When we talk about safer communities, we have to talk about the role financial empowerment can play in reducing violence.

Gun violence is a complex issue with many root causes, but one factor that often gets overlooked is economic instability. When individuals and families lack access to financial education, living-wage opportunities, and wealth-building tools, it can contribute to cycles of stress, limited choices, and community disinvestment.

So how does financial literacy make a difference?

Here’s the connection: Communities with greater economic stability often experience lower rates of violence. When people have access to resources, pathways to success, and a sense of financial control, there is less desperation and more opportunity. This isn’t about placing responsibility on individuals, it’s about recognizing that education, access, and investment matter.

Safer communities are built through more than enforcement. They’re built through opportunity. When people have the tools to build stable, secure futures, it changes what feels possible which can change everything.

National Minority Health Month is also about our youth; the next generation navigating a complex world while building their identity and voice.

Young people in minority communities often face unique pressures, including social expectations, cultural stigma around mental health, and limited access to safe, supportive spaces to express themselves. Mental and behavioral health challenges can show up as stress, anger, withdrawal, low motivation, or feeling overwhelmed—but they are often misunderstood or dismissed. National Minority Health Month is also about empowering young people to take charge of their mental and behavioral health.

Your mental health matters—and taking even one step can make a difference. When we invest in the mental health of our youth, we invest in stronger futures.

Addressing mental health is a critical part of reducing gun violence, especially when it comes to preventing crises and supporting emotional well-being. When people have access to care, coping tools, and strong support systems, it can reduce isolation, impulsiveness, and the risk of harm to themselves or others. Investing in mental health care helps create safer, healthier communities for everyone.

April is National Minority Health Month, a time to raise awareness about the health disparities that impact communities of color and to take action toward equity.

Mental and behavioral health are essential parts of overall well-being, yet many adults in minority communities face barriers to care. These can include stigma, lack of access to culturally competent providers, cost, and past negative experiences within the healthcare system. Over time, unaddressed stress—from systemic inequities, work, caregiving, and daily life—can build into anxiety, depression, burnout, and chronic health conditions. Mental health doesn’t exist in isolation. It affects physical health, relationships, parenting, and quality of life.

This month, here are 10 actionable ways adults can prioritize mental and behavioral health. Taking small steps can lead to meaningful change—for yourself and your community.
