This morning, Commissioner of Health Dr. Gale Burstein joined Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, and representatives from Buffalo Public Schools and the University at Buffalo Nursing School to announce a series of back to school vaccine clinics for Buffalo Public Schools students.

This also served as a reminder to all Erie County parents and caregivers that school-aged kids must be up to date with required vaccines by September 17 in order to remain in school, as required by New York State Public Health Law 2164.

These clinics are for Buffalo Public Schools students only. Parents and guardians should bring their child’s immunization record if available. Buffalo Public Schools students must bring a completed and signed consent form that includes any health insurance information to the clinic. Parents or guardians do not need to be present for their child to receive a vaccination.

Families are asked to bring their child’s health insurance information to the clinic. There will be no out-of-pocket cost to the family for required vaccines, regardless of insurance status. While pre-registration is encouraged, walk-ins will be accepted based on availability.

One of the most beneficial aspects of clinical skills simulation exercises is the debriefing session afterward. Our students participated in a simulation around childbirth, from labor to post-birth care, in Wende Hall in March 2025 for NSG 317: Wellness and Illness Concepts I. James C***a, simulation coordinator and clinical instructor, led the debriefing. Learn more about why UB was recently designated SUNY's first Nursing Simulation Center of Excellence ↙️

UB Nursing instructors are passionate about training the next generation of nurses.

Alyssa Hamel, psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioner program director and clinical assistant professor, recently shared why she pursued teaching: "I became an educator to pay forward the gift of knowledge, guidance, and preparation that my own mentors and teachers so generously gave me. My goal is to help the next generation pave their own way with confidence, skill, and compassion. Teaching also allows me to keep my own knowledge growing and my curiosity alive."

Several UB Nursing faculty and students participated in the third annual 7th Generation Operation event on July 23 at the Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences - University at Buffalo, which provides indigenous students with a hands-on look at health care careers. Presented by the Jacobs School and the Seneca Nation Education Department, the event hosted 64 students, the majority of whose tribal heritage is the Seneca Nation. Other tribal heritages represented were Chippewa, Onondaga and Tuscarora.

Molli Oldenburg, family nurse practitioner program director and clinical associate professor; Amanda Adams, clinical assistant professor; Mary Rhinehart, nursing skills coordinator and clinical instructor; Jaclyn Samulski, experiential learning coordinator; Jatsia Kramer Chen, adult-gerontology nurse practitioner program student; and Olga Glagovyak, traditional bachelor’s program student, demonstrated some foundational nursing skills.

The seven generations in the program’s title refer to a Haudenosaunee principle that emphasizes making decisions that will benefit the seven generations to come, while honoring the seven generations who came before. Learn more about the program ↙️

The World Health Organization has recently called for a global expansion of midwifery models of care, as these cost-effective health care approaches are clinically proven to help save the lives of mothers and infants. The U.S. maternal mortality rate remains unacceptably high, in which women from marginalized groups are disproportionately affected. The WHO cites recent modelling that indicates universal access to midwifery care could avert more than 60% of all maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths, amounting to 4.3 million lives saved annually by 2035. This modelling also suggests that even a 10% increase in coverage could save 1.3 million lives each year. Learn the facts about lifesaving midwifery care ↙️

Nicole Zhu, UB Nursing traditional bachelor's program student: “I learned that nursing isn’t limited to bedside care; it also includes research, where we can explore relevant health issues and develop interventions to improve evidence-based practice in clinical settings.” Zhu and several other nursing students were among 200 undergraduate students who participated in the Chancellor’s Summer Research Excellence Fund. The program provides paid summer internships and advances SUNY’s goal of having every undergraduate complete a high-quality internship or experiential-learning opportunity before earning a SUNY degree.
