I’ve been thinking a lot about how complicated skincare has become.

Ten steps. Layering rules. Actives stacked on actives. Products bought with the best intentions, then half-used because remembering what goes where starts to feel like homework. Somewhere along the way, care became a chore.

And I just don’t believe it has to be that way.

The routines that work... the ones people actually enjoy and stay consistent with, are usually simple. Solid. Foundational. Built around supporting the skin, not constantly trying to outsmart it.

Cleanse. Hydrate. Protect. Feed the barrier. Repeat.

There’s something deeply underrated about returning to basics and doing them well. Skin loves rhythm. It responds to steadiness.
To support.
To being nourished instead of constantly pushed.

At Nickel City, that’s always been the point. Not more for the sake of more. Not chasing every new thing. Building a ritual you can remember, one you actually want to do at the end of a long day. Something that feels good in your hands and makes your skin feel held.

I keep coming back to the same phrase this week… the only way out is through.

I hear it in different ways, from different people, at different points in their lives. I work closely with oncology patients in all stages of survivorship, all ages, all walks of life, and somehow it always circles back to that same truth.

“The only way out is through.”

That’s the part no one really prepares you for. The through. The living inside it. The days where you don’t recognize yourself, the moments where your body feels unfamiliar, the quiet grief of expectations you didn’t even realize you were holding.

We think the hard part is the diagnosis, the treatment, the milestone. And those are heavy, no question. But the real work lives in what comes after, and what continues alongside it.

I had a Facials with Friends class this week with Pink Ribbon Good, (much gratitude to for hosting us at ) and like it often does, the conversation drifted toward aging. How to slow it down. How to fix it. How to get back to something that feels more acceptable, more recognizable.

And I get it, as an esthetician, as a woman… of course I do…

But sitting in a room with women who have been through so much, who are still going through it, that idea starts to feel… a little misplaced.

Because while we’re busy trying to rewind the clock, life is asking us to be here. In this version of ourselves. As we are. Not before. Not later. Now.

The through is uncomfortable because it asks you to let go of the version of yourself you thought you were supposed to be. It asks you to sit in the in-between without rushing to fix it or define it.

And that, my friends, is not easy work.

But there is something honest about it. Something real.

The only way out is through. And maybe through isn’t something to fight. Maybe it’s something to meet, one small moment at a time.
