We’re pleased to share the launch of a new support service created to strengthen and support doulas throughout New York State!

As we continue to expand our work, Calming Nature Doula Center Inc. is pleased to share our newest initiative focused on supporting doulas, with the launch of our Doula Resource Boutique! A new professional training and workforce development hub designed to support Birth and Postpartum Doulas across Western New York and New York State.

The Doula Resource Boutique was created in response to the growing need for culturally responsive, community-based doula care and the importance of supporting doulas with sustainable career pathways. This initiative is fully funded by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Family Services, and there is no cost to doulas who are enrolling in or currently enrolled as New York State Medicaid providers.

The center will offer professional training, New York State Medicaid enrollment guidance, mentorship, workforce sustainability resources, and space for collaboration and peer connection. By removing financial barriers to training and professional support, the Doula Resource Boutique helps strengthen the doula workforce while expanding access to trusted, community-based care, particularly for families in underserved and historically marginalized communities.

We look forward to continuing collaboration with our partners and community as this new resource grows. We welcome opportunities to share more about how this work supports both families and providers across the region.

If you or someone you know would like support please complete our appointment request on our website.

🌿✨ International Women’s Day | Honoring the Power of Women ✨🌿

March 8th reminds us of the incredible strength, wisdom, and love that women bring into the world every single day. International Women’s Day invites us to reflect on the power of giving—and what can be gained when that giving is intentional.

As women, we are life-givers, nurturers, healers, and protectors of generations. From the quiet strength of pregnancy to the sacred work of birth and motherhood, our bodies and spirits carry stories of resilience and transformation.

At Calming Nature Doula, we witness this power every day. We see women stepping into motherhood with courage. We see families being formed through love, patience, and support. And we see the beauty that happens when women are surrounded by care, knowledge, and community.

Today we honor every woman—
🌸 The mothers
🌸 The daughters
🌸 The grandmothers
🌸 The birth workers and caregivers
🌸 The women still discovering their strength

Your presence matters. Your voice matters. Your journey matters.

When women support women, communities grow stronger, families grow healthier, and future generations are nurtured with intention and love.

Happy International Women’s Day to the women who continue to pour into others while still rising, healing, and blooming themselves. 🌿

🌸 Women, Check In With Your Body 🌸

In honor of Women’s History Month, this is your reminder to take a few minutes for yourself and your health. This video is about doing a breast self-exam — something simple that can help you learn your body and notice changes early.

Breast Cancer affects so many women, but early detection can make a huge difference. Knowing what’s normal for your body is powerful.

Take a moment each month to check yourself.
Look. Feel. Pay attention.

Your health matters. Your life matters. 💗

Share this with another woman you love — a sister, mother, daughter, friend, or aunt — because when one woman is informed, we all become stronger. ✨

Of course you’re beautiful.

Not because of filters.
Not because of approval.
Not because someone else said so.

You’re beautiful because you carry life in your spirit. Because you rise, even when it’s heavy. Because your softness is strength and your strength is sacred.

You are beautiful in your stretch marks, in your healing, in your becoming.
Beautiful in your boundaries.
Beautiful in your voice.
Beautiful in the way you love, nurture, build, and bloom.

Happy Women’s Month to every woman learning herself, choosing herself, and honoring herself.

Of course you’re beautiful. You always have been. 🌿✨

March — Honoring Her Story, Her Strength, Her Legacy 🌸🌿

March is recognized globally as Women’s History Month — a time dedicated to honoring the countless contributions women have made to American history and society. At the heart of this month is International Women’s Day (March 8th), a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight for women’s rights, equity, and recognition around the world.

As we also prepare for World Doula Week (March 22–28), we reflect on how deeply birth work is woven into women’s history. For generations, women have supported women — as midwives, healers, aunties, elders, and doulas. This is ancestral work. Sacred work. Community work.

At Calming Nature Doula, we honor the legacy of the women who paved the way in maternal health and birth advocacy — and we continue that mission by protecting, educating, and empowering birthing families today.

Women’s History Month reminds us:
✨ Women belong in every room where decisions are made.
✨ Women deserve safe, respectful healthcare.
✨ Women’s stories matter — especially in birth spaces.

This month, we celebrate the strength of mothers, the dedication of doulas, and the power of community. We honor the past, stand strong in the present, and advocate boldly for the future.

Because when women are supported, families thrive.
And when birth is respected, generations are changed. 🌿🤎

✨🖤 Closing Out Black History Month — Honoring Shannon Johns 🖤✨

As Black History Month comes to a close, we proudly honor Shannon Johns — Founder & CEO of Calming Nature Doula Service & Center — for her powerful leadership and unwavering commitment to maternal health equity in Erie and Niagara Counties. 🌿

Her journey began long before the boardrooms and hospital partnerships. As a young teen mom, Shannon faced obstacles and challenges that could have defined her limits — instead, they shaped her leadership. She transformed lived experience into purpose, advocacy, and systems change.

🌿 Today, she leads:

• The first MWBE-certified (Minority & Women Business Enterprise) doula organization in Western New York
• The first Black-owned doula organization in WNY to provide step-by-step Medicaid insurance enrollment and billing guidance for doulas
• The first Black-owned doula organization in WNY to establish an in-hospital doula program

From her journey as a mother of six to becoming a certified doula, childbirth educator, and lactation counselor, Shannon turned lived experience into legacy. Since founding Calming Nature Doula in 2014, she has helped hundreds of families receive culturally responsive, compassionate, and empowering birth support.

🌟 Community Impact & Media Recognition:

• Featured on WGRZ Channel 2 News, speaking on the expansion of Medicaid doula coverage and the importance of community-based birth support.
• Recently highlighted on WKBW-TV Channel 7 News for the opening of the Doula Resource Boutique, a first-of-its-kind hub supporting doulas with mentorship, training, and professional guidance in Western New York.

🌿 Under her leadership, Calming Nature Doula has:

• Advocated for and supported the expansion of permanent Medicaid coverage for doula services in New York State.
• Secured major grant funding — including:
✨️March of Dimes- Expanding Equitable Access to Doula Services.
✨️Blue Fund award from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York.
✨️New York State Department of Health Doula Expansion funding
• Currently Partnered with Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center to integrate doula care into hospital-based services.

Shannon’s work bridges hospitals and homes, policy and people, advocacy and action. She is not only building programs — she is building pathways for safer births, stronger families, and a more equitable future for Black mothers and babies.

Thank you, Shannon, for leading with heart, vision, and purpose. Your work is history in the making!! 🌸🖤
