✨🖤 Closing Out Black History Month — Honoring Shannon Johns 🖤✨
As Black History Month comes to a close, we proudly honor Shannon Johns — Founder & CEO of Calming Nature Doula Service & Center — for her powerful leadership and unwavering commitment to maternal health equity in Erie and Niagara Counties. 🌿
Her journey began long before the boardrooms and hospital partnerships. As a young teen mom, Shannon faced obstacles and challenges that could have defined her limits — instead, they shaped her leadership. She transformed lived experience into purpose, advocacy, and systems change.
🌿 Today, she leads:
• The first MWBE-certified (Minority & Women Business Enterprise) doula organization in Western New York
• The first Black-owned doula organization in WNY to provide step-by-step Medicaid insurance enrollment and billing guidance for doulas
• The first Black-owned doula organization in WNY to establish an in-hospital doula program
From her journey as a mother of six to becoming a certified doula, childbirth educator, and lactation counselor, Shannon turned lived experience into legacy. Since founding Calming Nature Doula in 2014, she has helped hundreds of families receive culturally responsive, compassionate, and empowering birth support.
🌟 Community Impact & Media Recognition:
• Featured on WGRZ Channel 2 News, speaking on the expansion of Medicaid doula coverage and the importance of community-based birth support.
• Recently highlighted on WKBW-TV Channel 7 News for the opening of the Doula Resource Boutique, a first-of-its-kind hub supporting doulas with mentorship, training, and professional guidance in Western New York.
🌿 Under her leadership, Calming Nature Doula has:
• Advocated for and supported the expansion of permanent Medicaid coverage for doula services in New York State.
• Secured major grant funding — including:
✨️March of Dimes- Expanding Equitable Access to Doula Services.
✨️Blue Fund award from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York.
✨️New York State Department of Health Doula Expansion funding
• Currently Partnered with Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center to integrate doula care into hospital-based services.
Shannon’s work bridges hospitals and homes, policy and people, advocacy and action. She is not only building programs — she is building pathways for safer births, stronger families, and a more equitable future for Black mothers and babies.
Thank you, Shannon, for leading with heart, vision, and purpose. Your work is history in the making!! 🌸🖤
