You’ve just brought life into the world. Now your body and mind begin the journey of recovery—and those first 24 hours are full of new sensations, emotions, and needs.
Here’s what to expect in those first hours after birth (whether you delivered vaginally or by C-section):
🩸 Bleeding and cramping – Your uterus is contracting to return to its normal size. Bleeding will be heavy at first, like a very intense period, and should gradually slow over time.
💧 Swelling or soreness – Especially around the perineum or incision site. Ice packs, gentle movement, and rest can help ease discomfort.
👶🏽 Skin-to-skin time – Your baby will likely be placed on your chest for bonding. It helps regulate their breathing, temperature, and heartbeat—and supports breastfeeding if you choose to nurse.
🌙 Extreme fatigue and adrenaline crashes – You may feel wired, exhausted, emotional—or all of the above. Let your body rest. Let others help.
🤱🏽 Feeding cues and learning your rhythm – Your baby may be sleepy at first, but they’ll likely start rooting or showing hunger signs. Those first feedings are more about connection than perfection.
💬 You can ask questions. You can say you’re unsure. You can change your mind.
Your care team should check in with you often, but you can also speak up if anything doesn’t feel right.
✨ It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. You just did something incredible. Go gently. You deserve care, patience, and support.
