Nothing says back-to-school like a night of connection, laughter and support!

Last night, our DEI Committee and Residential team brought families together for a Back-to-School Family Fair full of fun activities and new backpacks stocked with supplies.

This event was a great success, helping kids feel prepared and caregivers feel connected.

This week, our Preventive Services and Wraparound program received a generous donation of school supplies for the families they serve. Organized by our very own Makenzie Victor, High Fidelity Wraparound Supervisor, together with her father Bill and sister Jessica, this annual tradition has become something the family looks forward to each year.

"My dad and I have so much fun shopping together each year for this," shared Makenzie. "I always think about how excited new supplies made me for the new school year and I wanted all the kids we serve to have that same feeling."

A huge thank you to Makenzie, Bill and Jessica for their continued support and kindness!

Please join us in congratulating Josie Houtsma, Haven House Supervisor, on reaching 35 years at Child and Family Services!

Josie began her career at C+FS in 1990 after moving to Buffalo from the Netherlands. Starting as a counselor at Haven House, she credits the Agency with helping her through her initial homesickness. “To be able to go to my job and know that I had work and a purpose, it really anchored me,” she shared.

Through her years working with survivors of domestic violence, Josie found both personal and professional growth that shaped her approach to her work and life. Listening to clients share their stories deepened her empathy and strengthened her belief in the resilience of the human spirit.

In 2017, Josie became Supervisor of the Counseling and Advocacy Program. While her focus shifted to supporting the staff who serve clients, she has continued to counsel when needed. “The most important part is providing the support to our staff because I think if the staff feels supported and they feel valued, it’s good for clients,” she explained.

That support, and the opportunity to see its impact, continues to inspire Josie. “It’s really gratifying when you know you’ve made a difference in people’s lives,” she reflected.

We are so grateful to Josie for her continued passion and dedication!

At our Community Residence in Cheektowaga, something special is happening, one meal at a time.

What began as one child’s love for cooking has become a weekly tradition. Now, two kids take the lead each week, planning and preparing meals for their peers and staff.

“They’ve been taking so much pride in their cooking and meal planning,” said Patience Bateau, Residential Supervisor. “It’s boosted their confidence, for sure.”

More than a meal, it’s a recipe for growth, independence and connection.

Please join us in congratulating Mary Czopp, Chief Communications and Development Officer, on reaching 15 years at Child and Family Services!

Our next Faces of C+FS feature shines a light on Haley George, Case Planner in our Foster Care and Adoption Program!

With a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a passion for working with children, Haley found her path in social services through meaningful, people-focused roles. While earning her degree, she worked at Wegmans in various customer service positions which helped shape the way she now engages with the children and families she serves.

In her role as a case planner, Haley works to reunite children in foster care with their families, ensuring their safety and well-being along the way. She also supports parents through their court-ordered services and supervised visitation to help maintain family bonds.

“Working as a case planner has challenged me, rewarded me and taught me so many things. That’s what I love about my role,” she shared. “Every day is different.”

Haley says that one of the things that drew her to Child and Family Services is the supportive environment and mission-driven work. “From day one, I’ve always felt like part of a team,” she said. “This agency does important, meaningful work in the community, and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

Nicole Luko, Program Manager, couldn’t agree more.

“In just over a year, Haley has managed to become a staple in the Foster Care and Adoption program. She demonstrates a level of compassion and diligence that allow her to make strong connections with the families we serve no matter how brief or long we serve them,” shared Nicole.

Thank you, Haley, for your compassion, energy and dedication to the families we serve!
