We were honored to join long time collaborator on our team and self advocate on a trip to Albany this week to advocate with and for better solutions and transparency in home care. We are so proud to be able to support the work of advocates who arrived from all over the state, following the leadership and generosity of Renee with her resources, in sharing their stories with our representatives who don't often get the chance to hear from adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, care workers, and all those who rely on home care.
Every time we travel together, we also learn more about what good care can and should look like. We learn how to support each other on long car rides and loud packed rooms, how to create space and time for translation so no one is left out, how to storytell about closed doors and long waits to keep each other courageous in telling our stories, and so many other ways to let each other know we are seen and loved. Each moment reminds us, in the words of Arundhati Roy, another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, we can hear her breathing.
Renee adds: "We imagine her calling to us. A world with care is prioritized and embodied in society's values, actions, and the way we all show up together. Welcome communities come together, love and support every human being, with Care at the center of who we all are."
