🌿 Bug Bites: What’s Normal, What’s Not & When to See a Doctor 🦟
It’s summer in Bulverde—and that means more time outside… and more chances of bug bites! Most are harmless, but some need a little extra care. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe and comfortable:
🐜 Common Bug Bites in Our Area
Mosquitoes – Itchy, red bumps. Risk: West Nile virus.
Fire ants – Painful, pus-filled blisters. Risk: allergic reactions.
Ticks – Can carry Lyme or other tick-borne diseases.
Spiders – Mostly harmless, but watch for brown recluse or black widow.
Scorpions – Sting can be painful but rarely dangerous.
✅ What’s Normal
Mild redness, swelling, and itching
Symptoms that improve in 1–3 days
No spreading redness or increasing pain
🛑 See a Doctor If You Notice…
Fever, chills, or nausea
Spreading redness, pus, or warmth at the site
Difficulty breathing, dizziness, or swelling of the face/lips (call 911!)
A bite that gets worse after 48 hours
A tick that’s been attached for more than 24 hours
🧴 At-Home Treatment Tips
Wash the area with soap & water
Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
Use hydrocortisone cream or antihistamines for itching
Avoid scratching to prevent infection
Remove ticks with fine-tipped tweezers—pull straight out, not twisting
⚠️ Signs of Allergic Reaction or Infection
Hives or swelling beyond the bite
Trouble breathing or chest tightness
Rapid heartbeat or lightheadedness
Increasing pain, swelling, or red streaks from the bite site
🐞 Prevention is Key
Wear long sleeves & pants when hiking or gardening
Use insect repellent with DEET or picaridin
Keep yards trimmed & avoid standing water
