A 48 male patient consulted me in February/2024 with a symptom of pain when he urinated. He had had that symptom for several months. His urologist ordered a urine test and it was normal. I order the fundamental tests of hair, saliva, and comprehensive blood and urine tests. Two of the tests detected calcium/phosphorus imbalance predisposing to urinary stones. He initiated a personalized natural health program of natural supplements and I prepared an herbal liquid formula for him. After two months following his personalized program, he eliminated urinary yellow stones in two episodes. After that, his symptom of pain when he urinated disappeared. He took a picture of one of the stones; you can see it below as a yellow triangle.

Hair Analysis and Immune System

Hair analysis and nutritional balancing science can help assess and improve the activity of the immune system (this is of fundamental importance in the prevention and treatment of infections). These may be used to help enhance energy levels, correct mineral deficiencies, eliminate toxic metals, and balance the oxidation rate.

Energy And The Immune System
As with all body systems, the immune system is dependent upon the amount of available biochemical or adaptive energy. Low energy is one cause of immune system dysfunction. Energy production in the body is dependent upon at least two basic mechanisms:

1. the energy pathway or the steps involved in converting food to ATP and
2. the metabolic or oxidation rate. The term 'oxidation rate' was coined by Dr. George Watson, a researcher at UCLA. It is similar to the metabolic rate which is an older term.

To use an analogy with a combustion engine, the energy pathway is similar to the steps the fuel takes getting from the tank to its final combustion in the engine. A blockage anywhere along this pathway will reduce power output. The oxidation rate is similar to the RPM of an engine, or the efficiency of the engine. All biochemical reactions in the body have optimum reaction rates. The rate will vary depending upon one's activity level, but excessive deviation from the optimum rate will reduce energy output.

Hair analysis may reveal blockages in the energy pathway. Many minerals are required for ATP production in the body. Deficiencies of magnesium, potassium, zinc, manganese, chromium, and other minerals will impair energy production. Also, toxic metals detectable on the test interfere with energy production. They replace vital minerals in enzyme binding sites, impairing the functioning of the enzymes

Hair mineral analysis may also be used to assess the oxidation rate. Dr. Paul Eck discovered that the balance of the electrolytes (calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium) can provide us with this information. Both the levels of these minerals and the ratios between them are important.

Measuring Energy Efficiency
Dr. George Watson used blood pH and carbon dioxide levels to determine the oxidation rate. This provided a minute-by-minute assessment however, it can change depending upon the time of day, recent meals, or other factors.

Dr. Paul Eck found the calcium/potassium ratio and the sodium/magnesium ratio in an unwashed sample of hair may be used to determine the average oxidation rate over a period of a few months. When the oxidation rate is excessively fast or slow, the efficiency of energy production decreases dramatically.

The calcium/magnesium ratio and sodium/potassium ratio are also energy indicators. Imbalanced ratios will decrease energy efficiency.

At times, all these ratios may be within normal limits however, the individual levels of the electrolytes are all elevated. This indicates an unstable condition and usually the presence of toxic metals, whether or not they are revealed on the test. This condition is referred to as "four high electrolytes".

If the ratios are good, but all four of the electrolytes are low, a chronic fatigue condition is indicated. This is explained in more detail in other newsletters and articles on this website.

The Sodium/Potassium Ratio
This is the single most important ratio to assess the immune system. When it is low it is called an inversion. The low ratio indicates immune system weakness. It also indicates chronic adrenal weakness, fatigue, and tissue catabolism. A loss of potassium from damaged cells causes higher potassium reading in relation to sodium.

The sodium/potassium ratio is considered the most important ratio on the test. If there are numerous imbalances on the mineral analysis, it is best to focus on correcting this one first.

Copper And Zinc Metabolism
Zinc is essential for the immune system and copper imbalance impairs the immune system. Copper is needed for aerobic metabolism. The mineral itself is a fungicide and anti-bacterial. Disturbance of copper metabolism favors anaerobic metabolism, used by bacteria and fungi. During an infection, the body normally sequesters iron in the liver and releases more copper into circulation to help fight the infection.

Copper imbalance is very common. At times the imbalance is obvious from the test. At other times it is hidden.

Other Toxic Metals
Cadmium, mercury, lead, and iron toxicity can impair the immune system by interfering with vital biological functions. Removal of these toxic metals through a nutritional balancing program will enhance immune system activity.

Enhancing The Supplement Program
The nutritional balancing supplement program assists in strengthening the immune system. For acute and chronic infections, supplements that may be added to the regular program include additional manganese, zinc, copper, vitamin A and vitamin C. Herbs that are helpful include lomatium, astragalus, echinacea, goldenseal (this herbs and others should be recommended or given in a formula by a professional herbalist), and therapeutic mushrooms. Colloidal silver is also helpful for many infectious conditions.

Plenty of rest, fresh air, deep breathing, and a healthy diet (based on the results of hair analysis and other tests such as saliva, blood work, etc.) can be of great help for any infection. Any other therapies that balance body energies or otherwise reduce stress on the body may also be very beneficial.

An emotional imbalance can also place great strain on the immune system. Meditation, inspirational reading, and resolving unhealthy emotional conditions will also enhance immune system activity.

Depression and Hair Analysis

Depression today is usually treated with drugs. However, the SSRI anti-depressants such as Prozac and Zoloft have potentially serious side effects and do not address causes. Dr. Julian Whitaker and Dr. Peter Breggin found that almost all so-called rampage murders were committed by people on SSRI anti-depressants. In one study of women who murdered their children, 24 out of the 31 were taking anti-depressants.

Depression is often related to nutritional imbalances. Hair mineral testing is an excellent way to identify many factors that contribute to depression and guide their correction.

Depression and Energy
A major cause of depression is fatigue. Mineral analysis can often detect the causes of fatigue and exhaustion. These include an imbalanced oxidation rate, vital mineral deficiencies, toxic metal excess, sugar and carbohydrate intolerance, excessive catabolism or tissue breakdown and poor protein synthesis. Before discussing these, let us examine the idea that depression can be a positive adaptation to fatigue and exhaustion.

Depression as a Corrective Measure
Dr. Paul Eck advanced the idea that depression may be a defensive or corrective symptom to prevent further damage in the face of exhaustion. When one's body is exhausted, depression may set in as a way to slow one down, to spare the body further damage.

The truth of this idea has been demonstrated a number of times in my practice. Patients who begin a scientific nutrition program sometimes report their depression is gone, but now they are exhausted. A few months later, they report their exhaustion is better as well.

This is a retracing or healing process. Fatigue and exhaustion preceded the development of depression. That is, depression is actually a later stage after exhaustion. Recovery reverses this process. For this reason, when the depression lifts, one is left with the exhaustion that was underneath it. Then as healing progresses, the fatigue also lifts.

Depression and the Oxidation Rate
Depression is common in very slow oxidizers and also very fast oxidizers because they do not produce energy efficiently. These imbalances are similar to running a car engine at the wrong speed or RPM. The energy efficiency goes down and the car has less power. This leads to fatigue and often to depression.

Depression is more common in slow oxidizers. These people are characterized by underactive adrenal and often underactive thyroid activity. The adrenal hormone cortisol induces a state of well-being or natural "high". When cortisol secretion is diminished, one may often feel low or depressed. Also, hypothyroidism and hypoglycemia in slow oxidizers can contribute to depression feelings.

In slow oxidizers, excess tissue calcium has a depressing effect on the central nervous system. It can also decrease cell permeability, blocking the flow of vital nutrients into the cells. Elevated tissue magnesium is often biounavailable. Magnesium is essential for energy production.

Slow oxidizers are also prone to candida albicans overgrowth. Candida produces alcohol and other toxins that can contribute to feelings of depression.

Slow oxidizers are also commonly copper toxic. As discussed below, copper excess is associated with feelings of depression. Slow oxidizers often don't feel like exercising. Yet exercise is known to help alleviate feelings of depression.

Slow oxidizers may not feel like eating protein, yet eating more protein and fewer sugars and starches helps prevent feelings of depression. Protein foods supply tyrosine, phenylalanine and other nutrients needed for neurotransmitter production.

Fast Oxidation
Fast oxidizers may also report depression. Fast oxidizers may seem to have plenty of energy, but this can be deceptive. Often they run themselves hard and become exhausted if they relax. Very fast oxidizers are not producing energy efficiently and can even become paranoid. Many fast oxidizers are on an energy roller coaster, because of a diet high in sugar and starches. When blood sugar drops, depression feelings can become severe.

Depression is more common in fast oxidizers when the sodium/potassium ratio is low. These people are called burned-out fast oxidizers, or at times called slow oxidizers under stress. With correction, they often convert to slow oxidizers. Correcting the oxidation rate through proper diet and supplementation often improves slow and fast oxidizer-related depression.

Copper, Candida and Depression
Copper is sometimes called the emotional mineral because it enhances emotions. One of these emotions is depression. Copper has diverse effects. It oxidizes and destroys vitamin C which is needed for the adrenal activity. It stimulates the biogenic amines, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine. It can interfere with thyroid activity, affect energy levels, cause insomnia that results in fatigue and it tends to raise tissue calcium levels which may contribute to feelings of fatigue and depression.

Copper imbalance is a potent cause of depression associated with premenstrual tension. Copper is also often a factor in vegetarians who are depressed. Vegetarian proteins are high in copper and low in zinc. Also, vegetarian proteins are low in sulfur-containing amino acids needed to help detoxify copper. Copper toxicity is also associated with food allergies, which can induce feelings of depression in some people.

A Low Sodium/Potassium Ratio
An empirical finding by Dr. Paul Eck is that a tissue sodium/potassium ratio less than 2.5:1 is strongly associated with fatigue and hidden copper toxicity. He found this pattern associated with chronic emotions including frustration, resentment, and hostility - all emotions of turning in upon oneself. Depression is also a form of turning one's attention in on oneself and common when the tissue sodium/potassium ratio is low.

Toxic Metals
All the toxic metals are directly neurotoxic. This includes cadmium, mercury, lead and arsenic. These may cause depression by directly blocking certain enzymes related to depression. They can also impair cellular energy production and induce fatigue that contributes to depression.

Hypoglycemia and Depression
Hypoglycemia causes the brain to temporarily starve for fuel. Depression is one of the main symptoms associated with hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemic tendencies are identified on hair mineral analyses by an imbalanced calcium/magnesium ratio, a low sodium/potassium ratio, an imbalanced oxidation rate or deficiencies of zinc, manganese or chromium.

Diet and lifestyle play important roles in hypoglycemia, although weak adrenals, nutrient deficiencies, toxic metals, stress, and other factors may all be important causes.

Slow oxidizers tend to have chronic low blood sugar due to weak adrenals. Fast oxidizers are more prone to acute hypoglycemic episodes due to low glycogen reserves, diets low in fats and oils and an excessive adrenal and thyroid activity.

Other Factors
Food allergies, chronic infections, a deficiency of natural light, lack of exercise and other factors can also contribute to depression. Prescription medication may also be used with the supplement program if needed.

Hair Analysis and the Associated Emotional States including Anxiety

Introduction
A fascinating area of research in hair analysis has involved the correlation of mineral values with emotional states. By studying thousands of tests, a number of very reliable associations have been made.

Such information can assist in helping a person understand himself better and can help practitioners to predict emotional reactions that may occur during a nutrition program. Doctors or nutritional consultants can and should, alert their patients that certain feelings are likely to surface when on a nutritional correctional program and not to worry, as this is expected and is in many cases, actually evidence of progress.

Why Is It Logical That There Should Be Mineral-Emotional Associations
The question arises why there should be such an excellent correlation between emotional states and body chemistry. The reason, the body functions as a system.

One principle of the systems theory is that anything that affects part of a system reverberates to affect the entire system. Thus, it is not strange that a person's emotional make-up and personality affect his chemistry and conversely, that biochemical alterations can strongly affect one's personality and behavior.

How To View The Mineral Emotional Connections
When studying a hair analysis to determine one's personality, it is wise to view the emotional characteristics that are revealed, as an indicator of that person's current response to stress.

That stress may be mainly biochemical, or it may be due mainly to various other factors.

Why View Patterns As An Indicator Of Stress Response
The importance of viewing emotional characteristics of minerals as the present response to stress is:

To avoid labeling a person. Labeling can do more harm than good. In no sense are these conditions fixed and they often change surprisingly fast when the proper combination of corrective measures is instituted.
It is too easy to fall into the trap of attributing a condition or behavior to a single mineral level or pattern. This is an error. We know that all minerals affect each other. It is virtually impossible to be deficient in just one mineral.

Similarly, it is virtually impossible to have a toxic level of a mineral, without having multiple underlying mineral imbalances.

For example, the toxic metal cadmium can accumulate in vital body tissues when there is a deficiency of zinc, calcium, iron, or copper. Manganese, iron, vitamin C and/or molybdenum deficiency can lead to an accumulation of copper. Lead buildup occurs more readily when a calcium deficiency is present.
It is not possible to determine from a hair analysis how much of a particular mineral pattern is caused by nutritional (biochemical) abnormalities and how much is due to other stresses in that person's life. A mineral pattern always consists of a combination of factors.

For example, two individuals eat a diet deficient in manganese. Eventually, they become deficient and begin to feel tired. One may develop a craving for chocolate, because the high content of copper in chocolate will make them feel better. The other takes up cigarette smoking because cadmium in ci******es helps compensate for the effects of a low zinc level (zinc deficiency). Whichever response is chosen, it may be a matter of convenience or chance, but it is also frequently based on other personality factors. Some people are comfortable with the detached feeling that is commonly associated with an elevated copper level, while others are decidedly uncomfortable and would tend toward the ci******es, since the cadmium provides a more grounded, in control feeling.

We note that in some cases nutritional biochemistry is definitely the limiting factor. In other cases, the emotions and attitudes must be favorably altered before biochemistry will be favorably changed.

Mineral - Mineral Interactions
When using this information, remember that everyone is a combination of numerous mineral patterns. Seldom is a pure type found. An emotion associated with a particular mineral can be modified by the presence of, or absence of, other minerals.

Certain minerals will reinforce the effect of another mineral, while the presence of other minerals will mask or balance the effect of another mineral.

A further complication is that commonly not all minerals are revealed in any one hair test. Some are sequestered in organs and tissues and may, depending upon one's metabolic rate, require several years to be revealed. Thus, it is possible to have emotional characteristics caused by a certain mineral without that mineral appearing on a current test report. It may well require a period of several years before these minerals can be mobilized.

With practice and experience, it is possible to identify hidden minerals by the patterns of other minerals.

Personality Associations

Minerals
Calcium — Keyword: Protective.

Low Calcium:
Emotionally unstable, irritable, hyperkinetic behaviors, short-tempered, tense, unable to slow down, extroverted.

High Calcium:
Rigid, withdrawn, calcium shell, introverted, sluggish, insensitive, diminished awareness.

Physiological Correlates:
Calcium is an element that readily forms solid compounds and is in great part, responsible for the structural strength of the body. Calcium metabolism is principally regulated by the thyroid and adrenal glands, which are also involved in regulating the metabolic rate. Thus it is not surprising that abnormalities in calcium levels are associated with changes in the metabolic rate.

Magnesium — Keyword: Relaxation.
Low Magnesium:
High-strung, irritable, hyperactive, belligerent.

High Magnesium:
Withdrawn, sluggish, depressed, sleepy. Hibernating animals exhibit very high magnesium levels.

Physiological Correlates:
Magnesium is known to exert a powerful sedative effect on the muscular and nervous system. Magnesium is also necessary for many enzymes associated with energy production. Abnormal magnesium levels, not surprisingly, detrimentally affect energy levels.

Sodium — Keyword: Emergency energy.
Low Sodium:
Fatigued, lethargic, depressed, unable to get started.

High Sodium:
Active, high energy, aggressive, self-starters.

Physiological Correlates:
Sodium is regulated primarily by levels of aldosterone, an adrenal cortical hormone. Sodium is intimately involved with the emergency adrenal response, adrenalin and aldosterone. Sodium is the first mineral to respond to stress and is essential for the initiation of the fight-flight mechanism to raise blood pressure, increase the rate of heartbeat, mobilize sugar from the liver and generally prepare the organism for fight or flight.

Potassium — Keyword: Follow through, or adaptive energy.
Low Potassium:
Fatigued, depressed, withdrawn, low energy, low stamina.

High Potassium:
Overactive, good stamina.

Physiological Correlates:
Potassium metabolism is regulated by glucocorticoid and thyroid activity. Glucocorticoids, as opposed to adrenalin, are the longer-acting adrenal hormones. By releasing glycogen from the liver, these hormones are responsible for long-term energy.

Iron — Keyword: Strength.
Low Iron:
Tired, weak, anemic, low energy.

High Iron:
Hostile, aggressive, rigid.

Physiological Correlates:
Besides its important role in bringing oxygen to the tissues, iron is intimately involved in energy production.

Copper — Keyword: Gentleness, emotionality, the feminine mineral.
Low Copper:
Diminished emotional response.

High Copper:
Effeminate, weak, sentimental, childish, fears, depressed, extreme emotions, schizophrenic syndrome, violence, premenstrual syndrome, postpartum psychosis.

Physiological Correlates:
Copper is necessary for energy production and for thyroid and adrenal function. The thyroid gland is intimately associated with one's emotional life.

An excess of bio-available copper stimulates excessive secretion of the biogenic amines - catecholamine, which exerts powerful effects on brain chemistry. Copper is also intimately associated with estrogen levels, which can explain the connection between menstruation and pregnancy.

Zinc — Keyword: Steadiness, the masculine element.
Low Zinc:
Emotional weakness, indecision, male impotency, heightened emotional life, effeminate, schizoid-like tendencies.

High Zinc:
Diminished emotional life, detached martyr type.

Physiological Correlates:
Zinc is necessary for protein synthesis, many enzyme systems and is critical for the functioning of the male reproductive system. Zinc acts as a sedative, anti-stress element.

Manganese — Keyword: Rigidity.
Low Manganese:
Fatigued, lethargic, weakness.

High Manganese:
Rigid, schizophrenia.

Physiological Correlates:
Manganese is involved in energy production, in collagen formation and neuromuscular function.

Chromium — Keyword: Flexibility.
Low Chromium:
Mood swings (hypoglycemia).

High Chromium:
Represents a chromium loss.

Physiological Correlates:
Chromium is part of the glucose tolerance factor, which is synergetic with insulin in controlling both blood and cellular sugar levels.

Toxic Metals
Lead
High Lead:
Dull, re****ed, hyperactivity, tremors, neurological diseases.

Physiological Correlates:
Lead is primarily stored in the brain and bones. Lead toxicity causes anemia and severely affects brain function.

Mercury
High Mercury:
Emotional, hyperactive, the mad hatter.

Physiological Correlates:
Mercury is deposited in the kidneys and brain, resulting in kidney damage and emotional aberrations.

Cadmium
High Cadmium:
Stubborn, controlling, tunnel vision, emotional, egotistical, pseudo-masculinity, aggressive.

Physiological Correlates:
Cadmium has a powerful aldosterone-like effect, raising sodium and favoring fast oxidation. Cadmium also lowers copper, thus covering up fears. Moreover, cadmium lowers calcium, speeding up the oxidation rate. Cadmium substitutes for zinc in many enzyme binding sites, so emotionally it isn't surprising that cadmium should have masculinizing effects.

Aluminum
High Aluminum:
Forgetful, childlike behavior, dementia.

Physiological Correlates:
Aluminum inhibits acetylcholine and is responsible for the formation of neurofibrillary tangles that short-circuit brain function.

Ratios
Low Sodium/Potassium Ratio:
Fatigued, burned-out, hostile, frustrated, resentful, defensive, depressed, unable to let go.

High Sodium/Potassium Ratio:
Forward-looking, a starter, anxious, aggressive, volatile, pushing it.

Physiological Correlates:
The sodium/potassium ratio is a vital indicator of electrolyte balance and is regulated largely by the balance of the pro-inflammatory adrenal hormones (aldosterone) and the anti-inflammatory adrenal hormones (cortisone).

Low Zinc/Copper Ratio:
Copper dominance, with all the characteristics of high copper, fears, heightened emotionalism, panic attacks, depression, anxiety, etc.

High Zinc/Copper Ratio:
Zinc dominant - diminished emotionality, depression, apathy, martyrdom. However, frequently copper is bio-unavailable and frequently zinc is displaced upwards by cadmium so that a high zinc/copper is not always a true reflection of the condition of the body chemistry.

Physiological Correlates:
Zinc and copper have an important synergistic/antagonistic relationship. The ratio of zinc to copper can thus be a helpful indicator for determining zinc and copper status.

High Calcium/Potassium and low
Sodium/Magnesium Ratios (Slow oxidation):
Fatigued, plodding, apathetic, withdrawn, introverted, low energy, depressed, thinking of the past, fearful, despairing and anxious.

Low Calcium/Potassium and high
Sodium/Potassium Ratios (Fast oxidation):
Extroverted, outgoing, high energy, nervous, anxious, thinking of the future, aggressive, paranoid, prone to energy and mood swings.

Physiological Correlates:
Slow Oxidation - Calcium levels are regulated by both the thyroid and adrenal glands. Sodium and potassium levels are largely regulated by adrenal function, as explained in earlier sections. A high calcium level corresponds to reduced thyroid function and low sodium and potassium levels correspond to reduced adrenal hormone output. For these reasons, a high calcium/potassium ratio and low sodium/magnesium ratios correspond to a slow metabolic rate. As the metabolic rate falls, energy production diminishes and release of glycogen from the liver is impaired. As a result, the sedative elements, calcium and magnesium, rise in the tissues, causing feelings of depression and fatigue.

One reason slow oxidizers dwell in the past is that most slow oxidizers remember a time when they had more energy.

The slow oxidizers can become apathetic and withdrawn because they lack the energy to do things or interact with people. Withdrawal and apathy are means of conserving energy.

Slow oxidizers can become despairing because when energy production drops to a certain level, life hardly feels worth living. Today a frightening fact is that many teenagers and even children are in this group of despairing slow oxidizers. This can lead to drug and alcohol use and su***de.

Fast Oxidation - Fast oxidizers (high sodium/potassium) are lavish with energy and often look for people or things to spend it on.

The true fast oxidizer really has the energy to spend, but this type of individual is a rarity today. More frequently, the fast oxidizer is addicted to stress and becomes uncomfortable if there is no action. The reason is that without stress of some kind, his adrenal glands would slow down and he would begin to develop many of the symptoms commonly associated with slow oxidation. To avoid that state, the fast oxidizer instinctively seeks stress and keeps going no matter what. Some people can do well this way for a long time.

When the oxidation rate becomes too fast, a person begins to experience the effects of low calcium and magnesium - namely a hyperactivity of the nervous and muscular system, anxiety, muscle spasms, and cramps. He may become paranoid and aggressive because the increased secretion of adrenal hormones and low calcium gives his nervous system a hair-trigger sensitivity and irritability. This is designed as a protective device as part of the fight-flight response, but when the metabolic rate becomes too fast, judgment becomes impaired, the individual becomes hyperexcitable and enters, what appears to him to be an out-of-control state.

The effect of fast oxidation can be seen most easily in a baby who becomes tired as the day goes on. He becomes more irritable, more difficult to control, to the point of simply screaming at the slightest provocation. A vicious cycle is set up because as the child's oxidation rate increases, calcium and magnesium levels drops making him even more sensitive to stress. Each stress, in turn, causes increased adrenal secretion, worsening the fast oxidation. A nap frequently solves the problem by breaking the vicious cycle, allowing restoration of the calcium and magnesium (sedative elements) and resting the adrenal and thyroid glands.

He can send test orders to other states in the USA, and the hair test order can be sent to other countries. Overall, Dr. Arias has had outstanding results in his patients. Optimal health and not feeling sick nor having a specific disease are two very different things. Dr. Arias has more than 30 years of experience.

I lived a paradisiacal childhood in much contact with mother nature with many hikes to the mountains and streams to catch little fish where my child's soul cringed before its wealth, size and beauty. gradually developed an interest in acupuncture reading articles in newspapers and magazines; I cut those articles meet them in a folder and based on these readings did a presentation on acupuncture to my classmates in the school where I was studying; I was 14 years old. This nascent interest in acupuncture and medicine was reinforced by the influence of my father who was a doctor. He was an eminent surgeon, polyglot, with a universal culture, a graduate of one of the best universities of the World before WWW II, the Sorbonne in Paris. He used acupuncture on some of his patients as part of their treatment during the latter part of his life as for instance in a patient with infertility that could become pregnant due to the acupuncture treatment done by him. Once, I accompanied him to a house-call to treat with acupuncture a famous painter who had pain in his shoulder. The painter was very happy with the improvement that was feeling on his shoulder with my dad acupuncture treatments. One of his favorite axioms, which I remember more, and that he expressed with singular emphasis is that in medicine 2 + 2 many times is not equal to 4. This came it to fully understand years later based on my experience in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Additionally, my mother, a very good woman with a sharp mind, has always helped me in all possible ways.

At the end of my high school in 1978, I decided to study medicine and after passing at three universities chose the National University of Bogota, Colombia. My interest in acupuncture and natural medicine increased while I was studying medicine. I met an acupuncturist doctor and I was his assistant for several months. After graduating as a doctor-surgeon in 1983, I received extensive practical instruction for one year with another doctor specializing in neural therapy. I also took a course of 3 months with a Chinese Professor in a hospital and went to numerous conferences on neural therapy, oxivenotherapy, ozone therapy and homotoxicology. I worked with enthusiasm for 4 years (1984-1988) with everything that I had learned performing well in different patients until I won a postgraduate scholarship to go to China to study Chinese medicine especially acupuncture and Chinese herbs. I left all my work, my family and my country to go to China to study what I had longed since childhood.

I went to Beijing, the capital of China, in the fall of 1988, and the first thing was to begin to study Chinese (Mandarin). It was a study and practice of this language very intense to the point of feeling that sometimes my head blew. The strong studies train, coupled with cultural change and climate constituted a real challenge that I decided to overcome. When I was beginning to adapt to China and study of the language, a revolution of Chinese students broke out, which massively took the streets and Tiananmen Square, the largest square in the world, in impressive demonstrations. I saw how this revolution had its beginning, middle, and end. This amazing revolution, expression of the human spirit of freedom, was crushed violently on June 4th, 1989. My study of Chinese was only interrupted for a week, and after completing one year of my apprenticeship I continued my studies of Chinese medicine in the Nanjing University of Chinese medicine in China. They were 3 intense years of theoretical and practical classes in several hospitals in herbology and acupuncture.
