World First Aid Day: Why First Aid Skills Are Important

The importance of first aid skills training

Many medical emergencies require quick action from a trained bystander to save a person’s life.

For example, workplace accidents can quickly lead to shock if immediate steps aren’t taken to control severe bleeding. Alternatively, a severe allergic reaction can become deadly within minutes without treatment (e.g., epinephrine autoinjector).

Additionally, there might be times when internet access is limited, such as during a natural disaster.

Therefore, you shouldn’t solely rely on finding and understanding the first aid resources you need in the chaos of the moment.

First aid certified people have the training to provide appropriate first aid care for everyday life, as well as during life-threatening situations where professional help from emergency services might be delayed.

Full CPR, AED and First Aid training gives students the knowledge and confidence to respond to a variety of medical emergencies. This includes but isn’t limited to:

Sudden cardiac arrest
Heart attack or stroke
Seizure
Choking relief
Diabetic medical emergency
Asthma attacks
Burns
Eye injuries
Poisoning
Heat and cold emergencies

CPR, AED and First Aid training courses teach simple techniques to provide medical assistance for adults, children and infants.

The most common degrees of burns are labeled as:

First-degree burns. Superficial burns that affect the top layer of skin, also called epidermis (e.g., mild sunburn).

Second-degree burns. Mild to moderate burn injury that damages the top and inner layers of the skin (epidermis and dermis).

Third-degree burns. Severe injury that destroys all layers of skin and subcutaneous tissue.

However, there are additional classifications of burns that are considered medical emergencies that can have serious consequences as they can cause significant or permanent damage to the tendons, nerves, muscles, and bones.

Taking a CPR and First Aid class can prepare you for an emergency situation. Make sure you know what to do and how to quickly get the victim the proper help when needed.

Burn injuries are among the most common household and workplace accidents, and they can vary widely in severity. Understanding the different types of burns — thermal, chemical, and electrical — and knowing the appropriate treatment for each is crucial for effective first aid and medical care.

The basics of burns:

A burn is an injury to skin, and possible underlying tissues, caused by an exposure to extreme heat, chemicals, or electrical contact. The severity of the burn is related to its depth and size. Deeper burns that result in blistering or broken skin are more severe. Additionally, larger burns — even those with a shallow depth — are also more serious.

Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are lifesaving devices that can significantly increase the survival rates for individuals experiencing sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Having AEDs in the workplace helps to ensure employee and patron safety, providing critical intervention in the event of a cardiac emergency.

Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere, and at any time. More than 436,000 people die from cardiac arrest annually in the United States. But effective bystander CPR and defibrillation with an AED immediately after SCA can more than double a victim’s chance of survival.

Do you know how to use an AED? Maybe it's time to learn!

Most Cardiac Arrests Occur in the Home

More than 85 percent of cardiac arrests take place at home. I frequently hear stories from patients about how their lives were saved because of CPR performed by a husband, wife, child, or friend. In fact, there has been a big push, led by the American Heart Association, to bring CPR training to schools, which can save even more lives. So take the challenge. If you don’t know CPR, learn CPR and gain the confidence in knowing that if you are ever needed, you too can save a life!

CPR is Not Performed Enough

Would you be surprised to learn that bystander CPR is done in less than half of all out-of-hospital cardiac arrests? National statistics have shown that only 15 to 30 percent of people who experience sudden cardiac arrests outside of hospitals receive bystander CPR. When people are asked why they would not give CPR, a very common answer is that they never received training. Other concerns, such as doing harm to the person, doing harm to oneself, legal risks, or concerns about infection, often diminish once people learn proper CPR techniques.

CPR Saves Lives

More than 300,000 people have cardiac arrests in the United States every year. Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when an electrical rhythm problem occurs and the heart is no longer able to pump blood effectively to the rest of the body. You might see a person suddenly collapse, lose consciousness, and stop breathing. The longer the body goes without circulation, the lower the chance of survival. By performing CPR, you are able to help the person’s blood keep circulating until an ambulance arrives and more advanced tools can be used. We know that the chance of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest increases significantly, by more than double, when CPR is started early.

Every minute that CPR and using an AED is delayed for a person in cardiac arrest, their chance for survival drops by 7-10%.

These two things give a person the best chance of survival.

Hands to Heart CPR is dedicated to getting the knowledge of CPR to all those in our community and around the world. We would like to share a story from the Rams defensive coordinator that was featured on AHA news.

It was Memorial Day weekend and Morris, the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams, was in Las Vegas. He and his wife flew in the night before with their kids, 7-year-old Maliya and 4-year-old Jalen. Around midday Saturday, Amaya arrived from Florida.

With the others at the pool, Amaya was eager to join them.

"I want to get my tan on, Daddy!" she said.

As Amaya jumped in and started splashing around with her siblings, Raheem settled into a lounge chair. He ordered a drink. Before it even arrived, something happened. Something that altered the lives of several families – and, Raheem hopes, the lives of everyone reading this.

The short version is that a lifeless 3-year-old boy was pulled from the bottom of the pool and Raheem played an integral role in reviving him.

The longer version is rich in detail and lessons. Raheem is sharing it to inspire others to learn CPR and how to use an AED. After all, he was inspired to do so after two recent events that rocked the NFL family: the on-field cardiac arrest of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin and the drowning death of the 2-year-old daughter of Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Shaquil Barrett.

Less than two weeks after his training, Raheem put it into action.

"If I hadn't taken that course, I wouldn't have known what to do," he told American Heart Association News.

Hearing a story like this always warms our heart. Knowing he had the tools given to him two weeks before someone he loved needed saving.

Here at Hands to Heart CPR, we love hearing stories of people using the information they learned in our courses being applied to real life situations. We want to highlight an award given to Donnie Burns and Trent Ashoo.

“It’s one of those trainings you hope that you never have to use,” said Donnie Burns, Nunn Construction’s Safety Manager. In late June, Donnie taught an American Red Cross Adult First Aid/CPR/AED class to several Nunn Construction employees including Assistant Superintendent Trent Ashoo. Neither of them would have guessed Trent would need to perform those same life-saving measures only a week later.

Trent was honored at an American Red Cross of Southeastern Colorado board meeting where he was given the Lifesaving Award for Professional Responders. This national award is issued by the American Red Cross headquarters in Washington, D.C. Donnie Burns was also awarded a Lifesaving Instructor Award for having effectively taught Trent CPR.

“Without a doubt,” reads the citation of Trent’s award, “the skills learned in the American Red Cross Training Services course helped to save the life of this man.”

For Trent, he is simply thankful he took the training at exactly the right time. “We may have had a very different situation on our hands if Nunn did not have such a great safety culture and resources allocated to training its employees,” he said.

“I am very grateful to be a part of the Nunn team and I cannot convey how appreciative I am to have the opportunity to work for such a great company and even better people.”

Hands to Heart CPR offers Adult and Child First Aid/CPR/AED courses almost every day at 9am, including weekends! We can also do group classes for your office or business and come to you.
