State Sen. Liz Brown, R-Fort Wayne, said she authored SB-24 because the FDA classifies sunscreen in the same way as Tylenol. That means most school districts require it to be kept in the nurse's office during the day and for the nurse to administer it like they do medication.

According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, "Gov. Kay Ivey has signed into law Senate Bill 63, which ensures that Alabama children have access to sunscreen while at school and school-related functions. Alabama joins UT, AZ and WA to become the fourth state to pass similar legislation this year. Pending legislation is still being considered in FL, LA, MA, PA and RI."
