Beef fat ------> Tallow.
I have tried my hand at beef tallow before, but I was not confident in the end result. (Which is fine. it can still be used for cooking, just not the best for anything skincare or cosmetic.)
This time is different. I rendered slow and for quite a while, strained through a coffee filter and let it set. It didn't separate and all the water was cooked out.
What are the benefits of beef tallow?
1. Tallow has a high smoke point (around 400°F / 204°C), making it great for frying and roasting without breaking down into harmful compounds.
2. Rich in Fat-Soluble Vitamins: Contains vitamins A, D, E, and K, which support immune health, vision, skin, and bone health.
3. Moisturizing & Healing: The fatty acid profile of beef tallow is very similar to human skin’s natural oils, which makes it deeply nourishing.
4. Anti-inflammatory: Can help soothe dry, irritated, or eczema-prone skin.
5. Rich in Antioxidants: Vitamin E helps fight free radical damage and supports skin repair.
6. Non-comedogenic: Absorbs well into skin without clogging pores (especially when rendered properly and not overheated).
7. Natural Alternative to Commercial Products: Can be used in homemade soaps, candles, balms, and salves.
8. Rust Prevention: Historically used as a lubricant and rust protector for tools and cast iron.
9. Eco-Friendly: A way to use the whole animal, reducing waste compared to discarding fat.
10. Rendering beef fat into tallow makes use of something that might otherwise go to waste.
11. When stored properly (in a cool, dark place), tallow can last months to years without going rancid.
I plan on whipping up this batch to create a fluffy "body butter" type. I also plan to add vitamin E oil and/or jojoba oil. We're on a learning journey over here.
