Vacay Mode

The stresses of everyday life trigger the release of stress hormones that are part of the "fight or flight" response. Living in this state for a prolonged time can lead to depression, weight gain, poor sleep and other health issues. Taking time to get away from the stresses of life can give your body a chance to repair itself. Taking time off can boost heart health and reduce your risk of coronary heart disease. Vacay mode can improve your mood and give you time to get the sleep you need. A break from work can recharge you physically and mentally. It can mean better health and may even add years to your life.

Olive Oil & Brain Health

Olive oil contains powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. A new study of about 92,000 people found that participants who consumed 7g (1/2 Tbsp) of olive oil per day had a 28% reduced risk of dementia-related death compared to those who rarely or never ate olive oil. Olive oil is packed with healthy monounsaturated fats that reduce inflammation and promote blood flow to the brain. Many studies of the Mediterranean diet have linked it to better cognitive health, and olive oil is a big part of that diet. To add more olive oil to your diet, try using it in dressings and marinades and cooking with it, but not at high heat.

Acupuncture For Gout

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by a buildup of microscopic crystals of uric acid. It is usually very painful. Standard treatments include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain relievers, corticosteroids and colchicine. In a new analysis, researchers looked at 15 studies of people with severe gout. Those who were treated with electro-acupuncture (a form of acupuncture in which a small electrical pulse is passed through the needles) had greater reduction in pain than those just receiving medication. However, the group that received both the medication and the acupuncture reported the best results.

“Leaves Of Three, Let Them Be”

To prevent poison ivy outbreaks, learn to identify these plants and avoid contact with them. Poison ivy plants have a compound leaf made up of three leaflets. The plants can grow low to the ground or as a shrub or as a climbing vine. A unique feature of the leaflets is that the center leaflet has a stalk, but the two side leaflets do not, they are attached directly to the stem. The side leaflets can have one smooth edge and one jagged edge that give them a sort of “mitten” shape. Another identifying characteristic is that the vines have a fuzzy or hairy appearance. Every part of the plant is poisonous and can cause a reaction.

How Sleep Affects The Body

Getting enough sleep is essential to good health; it’s the time your body repairs itself. Sleep triggers the release of growth hormones that help repair cells and muscles. Sleep also helps the body produce cytokines, which help fight infection and reduce inflammation. Sleep allows your brain to reorganize and catalog memories and to remove waste products and toxins. This process may help protect against future neurodegenerative diseases. Sleep helps regulate the balance of the hormones that signal hunger and satiety. It also helps regulate blood sugar levels. When you sleep, your cells recharge for the next day.

Find Your Rhythm

Having a consistent social rhythm, a regular pattern of daily activities, may be important to your mental health. Regular sleep/wake times, meal times, work hours, recreation/ exercise and social interaction may help protect your cognitive health. This type of routine can regulate your body's circadian rhythm and improve sleep quality, which is essential to optimal cognitive function. People who have regular routines score higher on tests evaluating life satisfaction and overall well-being than those with no routine. A lack of routine tends to increase stress and anxiety levels, which can negatively impact focus and memory.

Benefits Of Yogurt

Yogurt is a good source of protein and calcium, but it also contains probiotics. These are live cultures of "good" bacteria that may improve digestion and balance the gut microbiome. A healthy gut microbiome boosts immunity to help your system fight infections. The calcium in yogurt is essential for strong bones, and getting enough may help you prevent osteoporosis. Milk-based yogurt also contains potassium, which plays a role in cardiovascular health and muscle function. Consumption of Greek yogurt has also been associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. It may also help stave off yeast infections.

Treating Shingles

Shingles is an infection that's caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. Anyone who has had chickenpox is susceptible to getting shingles. The condition causes a painful, blistering rash, usually on one side of the body. Shingles is treated with prescription antiviral medications. These antivirals can decrease the severity of the rash, reduce its duration, and lower the risk of long-lasting complications. Over-the-counter pain medications may also help manage the discomfort from shingles. American Academy of Dermatology says the best way to prevent the disease is to get the shingles vaccination.

Screen Time Affects Kids’ Brains

A recent study suggests that screen time may be associated with delayed development in young children. Researchers studied about 8,000 children, considering the amount of screen time they had at age 1 and their functional development at ages 2 and 4 years. They found a dose-response link between greater screen time (anywhere from 1 to 4 hours) and developmental delays, especially in communication and problem solving at 2 and 4 years old. Experts suggest parents avoid screens for children younger than 18-24 months, except for video chatting with family. And limit screen time for ages 2 to 5 years to 1 hour per day, preferably high-quality educational programs.

Hula Hooping To A Slimmer Waist

Hula hooping is a good form of exercise and can help you burn calories, tone muscles, and shed fat for a slimmer waist. It burns about 210 calories per 30-minute workout and is a cardio as well as a core muscle workout. A weighted hula hoop will help you burn even more calories and slim down quicker. In a recent study, women using a weighted hoop trimmed an average of 3.4 cm from their waist and 1.4 cm from their hips after only 6 weeks. Also, the rhythmic forward and backward rocking movement helps release tension in the muscles of the lower back, improving blood flow to the spine and increasing flexibility.

Medication Safety Tips

Take medication as prescribed per doctor's instruction on the label. Store medications properly and out of the reach of children. Most medicines need to be kept in a cool, dry place, not exposed to extreme heat or cold. Be aware of expiration dates, side effects and refill amounts. Keep a medication list; be sure your doctor and regular pharmacists are aware of all the medications you are taking, including any over-the-counter drugs, herbals, vitamins or supplements. This can help prevent any drug interactions. If you live alone, make sure another family member has a copy of the list.
