Despite the chilly temperatures, pouring rain, road closures, and a few detours, our outing to the Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum in Seattle was absolutely worth the adventure! We spent the morning wandering through the incredible exhibits. Everywhere we turned there was another display that had us stopping to “ooh” and “ahh.” On our way home, we made a stop at a local Mongolian restaurant where everyone enjoyed building their own delicious bowls for lunch. It was the perfect way to warm up after a wet and chilly morning.

DIY English Muffin Pizza afternoon was a hit! 🍕 Residents got creative building their own personal pizzas with a variety of toppings to choose from. Everyone designed their perfect combination, and then we popped them under the broiler until the cheese was perfectly bubbly and delicious. Simple, fun, and the perfect afternoon snack!

Chef Trevor does it again! This month in Culinary Corner, Chef Trevor created beautiful poke bowls featuring fresh tuna, crisp veggies, and creamy avocado. For those who preferred a non-fish option, he also prepared a refreshing version with fresh watermelon. Each bowl was served in a perfectly baked wonton wrapper, adding the perfect crunch. The best part? Many residents who had never tried raw fish before decided to give it a try—and discovered they really enjoyed it! Always fun to see new flavors being explored around the table!

Our group had a great visit to the Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum, where we spent the afternoon learning about the history of hydroplane racing in the Seattle area. The museum is packed with beautifully restored boats and stories from the long tradition of hydros on local waters. We were lucky to have Kenny as our docent. His firsthand experience in the world of hydroplanes brought the exhibits to life, sharing how these incredible boats became such a big part of Seattle’s racing culture. Many of the hydros in the collection have been carefully restored and still make it back onto the water each year. It was a fascinating look at a unique piece of regional history—and a wonderful day out that everyone truly enjoyed. This outing also had a rare twist—the bus was packed mostly with men! Way to go, gentlemen, for showing up and filling those seats.🚤

Pat, one of our very own Merrill Gardens at Burien residents, put those feelings into words through her poem, “Bloom Where You’re Planted.” Her story captures the real emotions behind this transition—and the comfort that comes from finding connection and community again.

Our recent Blind Scent Test showed just how surprising and powerful our senses are! Residents enjoyed identifying familiar scents hidden in cups—some instantly recognizable, others challenging to name. Once the reveal happened, everything clicked! 😊 This fun activity highlighted the close connection between sight and smell, sparking laughter, memories, and engaging conversations. It’s amazing how simple experiences can bring joy and connection.

We turned blank canvases into winter works of art! ❄️ We started with a fresh canvas and painted our backgrounds, blending cool winter colors to set the scene. After everything dried, we carefully used sparkle Mod Podge to add glittery snowflakes on top—each one a little different and uniquely beautiful. The sparkle against the painted backgrounds was the perfect finishing touch. The end results were absolutely beautiful, and everyone was so proud of their creations!
