A story we see all the time.

A patient came to us after years of low back pain and seeing multiple providers. Over time, it was not just pain anymore.

Bending felt unsafe.
Twisting felt risky.
Lifting and even driving became things to avoid.

Her world slowly got smaller.

This is what persistent pain can do. It is not just about symptoms. It is about losing trust in your body.

This is also what we specialize in.

With Dr. Orit Hickman, the focus was simple and intentional
- Understanding her pain
- Gradually returning to movement
- Starting small, even just 5 minutes of walking

A few weeks ago, she shared this:
- She is now walking up to an hour.
- She is back to cycling and lifting.
- She feels normal again.

This kind of change happens when care addresses both pain and fear.

If this sounds familiar, this is exactly what we help people with. Questions? Call us at 206.327.988 or send an email to inquiry@painsciencept.com.

We often get taught that pain always means stop. But when pain has been around for a while, that rule is not always helpful.

Part of recovery is learning the difference between what is uncomfortable and what is actually harmful.

Some discomfort can be your body adapting, getting stronger, and becoming less sensitive. That does not mean you are causing damage.

You do not have to avoid everything that feels hard. You just need the right approach, the right pace, and the right support.

Win worth sharing đź’¬

One of our patients came to us after chronic pain started to limit the activities they once loved, especially being outdoors and staying active.

At the beginning of care, even simple movement like walking or swimming felt uncertain. They were not sure what their body could handle anymore.

Fast forward to today, they recently biked 30 miles without issues and are getting back into hiking and skiing again.

This is what we aim for, not just reducing pain but helping you rebuild confidence in your body so you can get back to the things that matter to you.

If pain has been holding you back, you do not have to figure it out alone.

Bad pain days can make it feel like you’re falling behind.

But progress in recovery isn’t about pushing through every time—or stopping completely when it’s hard.

It’s about learning how to adjust.

Modifying your exercises, slowing things down, and staying consistent with your plan is still progress.

Your home exercise program is not all-or-nothing. It’s meant to meet you where you are—even on the tough days.

And if you’re unsure how to adjust, that’s where your physical therapist comes in. You don’t have to figure it out alone.

For today’s Journal Club, Jordi, a 3rd year PT student from UW on her final clinical rotation here at PSPT, walked us through the latest guidelines from the American College of Sports Medicine.

Fun fact: the ACSM resistance training guidelines were just updated this March 2026, the first update in 17 years 🤯

Learning never stops đź’Ş

P.S. Added some screenshots from Tasha’s POV on her laptop, she joins our Journal Club via Zoom 💻

We recently heard something that really meant a lot to our team!

A patient shared that Dr. Courtney Johnson refers clients to us when others haven’t been able to figure out their pain problem.

That kind of trust isn’t something we take lightly.

We’re grateful to work alongside providers who stay committed to helping their patients find answers—even when the path isn’t straightforward.

A big thank you to Dr. Courtney Johnson of Trivas Family Medicine in West Seattle for your continued collaboration and confidence in our team.

And to our clinicians—this is a reflection of the care, curiosity, and persistence you bring to every patient.

Education is not separate from treatment. It is treatment.

Understanding your pain changes how your body responds to it.
When you learn how your nervous system works, movement feels safer, fear decreases, and recovery becomes possible.

This is why we don’t just treat symptoms—we help you understand them.

Because knowledge isn’t extra. It’s essential.

Many people living with pain feel fragile or worn out. But here’s the truth: your body is not broken, and healing is still possible.

đź’ˇ Pain is a protector, not proof of damage.
Sometimes pain stays even after tissues have healed. Think of it like a smoke alarm going off when you burn toast – the alarm is real, but there’s no fire.

đź’ˇ Healing is different than fixing.
It’s not about repairing a joint or disc. Healing is about helping your nervous system feel safe again – building trust in your body, step by step.

đź’ˇ Beliefs shape pain.
Thoughts like “My back is fragile” or “I’ll make it worse if I move” turn up the nervous system’s alarm. Changing these beliefs can quiet that alarm over time.

đź’ˇ Movement is medicine, when gentle.
Small, safe movements retrain your nervous system. Short walks, gentle stretches, and slow movements help your brain learn that motion is safe.

🌱 Try this simple step this week:
Notice one “broken” belief about your body. Choose a small, gentle movement that challenges it. Breathe.

Remind yourself:
“This movement is safe. My body is strong and adaptable.”

You’re not broken – you are teaching your brain that your body is okay.
