MAKE PEACE WITH YOUR BODY

Make peace with your body today my friend,
for it has toiled for many years just to keep you alive.
It has grown, weathered virus and disease,
healed countless wounds and fought many unseen battles, to keep your soul intact for its journey through this life.

Yes it has changed but it has been changing since the day you were born.
And it will continue to change until the day you die.
Make peace with this.

Striving against this change, is like trying to blow away the wind. Futile, pointless, misery-making.
Your body has served you well and done so with your daily hate and disapproval.
It has suffered years of daily, hourly negativity, pulsing its way from your brain to your cells…
Not good enough, not attractive enough, not perfect.

And every day you thought it wasn’t perfect, it really, truly was.

It was keeping you alive, supporting your rash decisions, counteracting your foolish mistakes, doing everything in its power to stay in the game.
For you.

Make peace with your body today, my friend, say your apologies, right your wrongs and move on with appreciation.

You are blessed.

Look around you, not everyone is so blessed.
Not every one is breathing, walking, thriving.
And whilst you are looking around, see that nobody is perfect. The way a body looks, says nothing about its strength, its longevity, its endurance.

This is not a rehearsal, this is your one shot at a life well-lived.

Make it count.

Our bodies flow through the plains
of night: they are time wearing itself out,
a presence that dissolves in a caress;
yet they are infinite, to touch them
is to bathe in a river of heartbeats
and return to the perpetual beginning anew.

Waking this morning noticing the accumulation of the year in my body — trials in grief and rage and also surges of pleasure and joy. I want to paint them, map them, praise them all — honor them so that I can cross into a new year carrying only what I need. What do you notice in your body?

“Grandma, how do you cope with pain?”

“With your hands, honey. If you do it with your mind instead of relieving the pain, it toughens even harder.”

“With your hands grandma?”

“Yes, our hands are the antennae of our soul. If you move them; knitting, cooking, painting, playing or sinking them into the ground, you send care signs to the deepest part of you and your soul lights up because you’re paying attention to it. Then signs of pain will no longer be necessary.”

“Hands are really that important?”

“Yes my daughter. Think of babies: they start to know the world through the touch of their hands. If you look at the hands of old people, they tell you more about their life then any body part. Everything that is done by hand is said to be done with the heart. Because it’s really like this: hands and heart are connected. Masseurs know well: when they touch someone with their hands, they create a deep connection. It is precisely from this connection that healing comes. Think of lovers: when they touch their hands, they make love in a more sublime way.”

“My hands grandma.... how long I haven’t used them like this!”

“Move them, my love. Begin to create with them and everything within you will begin to move. The pain will not pass away. And instead what you do with them will become the most beautiful masterpiece and it won’t hurt anymore. Because you have been able to transform its essence.”

For those who are in need of plant medicine

Since closing the Madrona House, this is now my dining room. I’m sitting here looking at all these herbs and oils thinking about how much they are needed right now. If you need plant medicine right now but can’t spare the extra $$, hit me up, I have a sliding scale.

Of all the mournful impacts that the pandemic has had on us, one of the most devastating is that it has diminished our opportunities to touch and be touched by other humans. Many are now starved of the routine, regular contact we had previously taken for granted.

"The more we learn about touch, the more we realize just how central it is in all aspects of our lives — cognitive, emotional, developmental, behavioral — from womb into old age. It's no surprise that a single touch can affect us in multiple, powerful ways."
— Maria Konnikova in "The Power of Touch"

"Everything we touch becomes a jewel for our enjoyment. We do not have to possess them, because every jewel is available for our delight. Everyone and everything here is a jewel."
— Thich Nhat Hahn in Cultivating the Mind of Love

"Of all the gifts we can give to people, the gift of our touch is one of the most priceless. Through our hands we convey a kind of radiance. A warmth seeps out from our inner fire, a wrap for someone's chill, a light for another's dark."
— Jan Phillips in Divining the Body

"A pat on the back, a caress of the arm — these everyday, incidental gestures that we usually take for granted, thanks to our amazingly dexterous hands. But after years spent immersed in the science of touch, I can tell you that they are far more profound than we usually realize: They are our primary language of compassion, and a primary means for spreading compassion."
— Dacher Keltner in "Hands on Research: The Science of Touch"

"Paradise is attained by touch."
— Helen Keller in Divining the Body by Jan Phillips

"Although not everyone is blessed with a healing touch, our touch can be a source of healing and blessing for others, especially when accompanied by a brief prayer."
— Tom Cowan in The Way of Saints

,
"Touch is far more essential than our other senses. … It's ten times stronger than verbal or emotional contact."
— Saul Schanberg in A Natural History of the Senses

"Touch deprivation is a reality in American culture as a whole. … It's not just babies needing to be touched in caring ways or the sick. It's not just doctors and nurses needing to extend it. It's all of us, needing connection, needing to receive it, needing to give it, with genuine happiness at stake."
— Rev Anthony David in "The Power of Touch" by Nora Brunner

"Touch is not optional for human development. From tool use to chronic pain to the process of healing, the genes, cells, and neural circuits involved in the sense of touch have been crucial to creating our unique human experience."
— David J. Linden in Touch

Jason Hine reminds us: "Every part of your body is adorable and incredible, an actual love body. A thousand tiny deities the size of molecules are worshipping and protecting each tiny particle of your body.

"There is a religion in another world that worships your stomach, your lungs, the curve of your thigh or your pectoral muscles as sacraments of a god or goddess.

"Your lovebody is a luxuriant forest at sunset in which light coruscates through dewdrops and deliciously awakens a thousand joyful wild creatures."

Every person has a unique journey to reclaim their power. For me childbirth was the beginning of showing myself what I, my body and spirit was capable of. The wild woman came out and I had no idea she existed within me. I trusted in the wisdom of my body, and when it came to push I went inward, got primal and I roared. My daughter came out 10 mins later.
.

They told you about the contractions, but did they tell you about the expansion? Did they tell you how your body would open to make way for the whole universe to pass through? Did they tell you how your heart would explode with a love bigger than anything you’ve ever known as you pulled your baby to your chest?

They told you about the ring of fire but did they tell you about the crown of stars? Did they mention that there’s a moment when your baby enters the world and you leave your body and touch the heavens and become the light of a million galaxies? Did they tell you how the pain of stretching to receive your child would be more exquisite than any sensation you've felt?

They told you would scream but did they tell you about how would you roar? Did they tell you about the power that would rise up from your belly as you called your baby forth with your mighty voice? Did they tell you how you would embody the wild woman within you as breathe fire with your song?

They told you would bleed, but did they tell you how that sacred blood wouldn't scare you? How you would feel grateful for that magical liquid of life as it trickled down your leg - how you would honour its flow and how it would help you heal a lifetime of hating your body's bleeding cycle.

They told these stories and taught you to fear birth, to fear your power, to fear yourself. But you are stronger and wiser than that mama. You know that birth is your divine dance, your soul's song, your moment with God, and you walk fearlessly into her open arms.

'Every Black Person Deserves To See Themselves This Way'

Frustrated by dehumanizing media images of black people, photographer Mikael Owunna uses fluorescent paint and UV light to adorn his subjects in stars, revealing magic as "infinite as the universe."

What I weigh...

I weigh the sea
I weigh the storm
I weigh a thousand stories long.
I weight my mother's fortitude and my father's eyes
I weigh the way they look at me
I weigh strength and fearless and the warrior in me.
I weigh all the pain and trauma that made me see
that I have more galaxies inside me than tragedies.

We all weigh joys and darkness and goodness and sin you see, we are infinite within this skin we are in.
So when they ask you what you weigh
you don't need to look down at any scale.
Instead, simply tell them the truth,
tell them how you
weigh whole universes
and storms and scars and stories too.
