Meet Bill, our wonderful resident who started a poetry reading and creative writing group at Village Concepts of Burien years ago. The group has since grown to over 20 participants, including both residents and local community members! They meet monthly in El Dorado’s social room, where Bill loves to share his homemade toffee. Residents share poetry and stories, often writing about memories from their past. This activity has allowed people to open up and express themselves in moving ways! Thank you for sharing your talents with us, Bill. We’re lucky to have you in our community! 💖

Our wonderful Admin Assistant Michelle brought the Philippines to Village Concepts of Milton! As part of our Cultural Celebration Series, Michelle wanted to share the culture of her birth country with the residents, and they loved every minute! She transformed the fireside into a traditional Bahay Kubo (hut) and shared everything from crafts, games, Filipino mango ice cream, festivals, traditional clothing, and indigenous animals including the national bird, a groovy, shaggy, feather-headed Monkey-Eating Eagle! Thank you, Michelle! 🇵🇭🎉

As part of our Cultural Celebrations Series, Village Concepts of Oak Harbor recently celebrated Japanese culture! 🎉 Oak Harbor has a strong Japanese exchange program, and we’re proud to partner with them to host students several times a year. During their visit, the students taught our residents how to make origami, played games, and shared beautiful singing and piano performances. Thank you to our Japanese exchange students for such a wonderful experience!

Our amazing Executive Director, Abby, and Maintenance Director, Donovan, at Village Concepts of Marysville recently treated residents to a live lumpia-making demonstration! Residents also enjoyed a discussion with Abby about the beautiful Filipino language and cultural traditions, as well as a video of the Tinikling, the national dance of the Philipines. ✨ Thank you, Abby and Donovan, for sharing your cooking skills and Filipino culture! 💛

🌺 The theme of the summer at our Village Concepts Communities is definitely Aloha! 🌴 Our team at Village Concepts of Sedro-Woolley hosted their annual summer BBQ — Hawaiian-style! Everyone dressed to impress in colorful Hawaiian shirts and leis, and the residents even performed a fun chair hula dance. Check out some of the highlights below!

Mark your calendar, next Tuesday, 9/2, is our second memory cafe from 1-3 pm. This community event is geared towards those in a memory care journey, be it as caregivers, relatives or patients themselves. No purchase is necessary, we just want to hold space for those who maybe need to talk or relax among those in similar situations. We have partnered with Village Concepts Communities who will be providing lights refreshments and well as offering information.

🎉 Village Concepts of Milton hosted an amazing car show with the Gig Harbor Cruisers! Residents took a "cruise" down memory lane as they spent the afternoon with some pretty cool vintage cars and their owners 😍. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special event and the Gig Harbor Cruisers for making it happen! We can't wait to do it again!

🎉 We celebrated Village Concepts Communities' 50th anniversary with our amazing residents and staff! Village Concepts has been proudly family-owned and serving seniors in the Northwest for 50 years. We’re honored to be part of the Village Concepts family at Village Concepts of Burien and to celebrate this incredible milestone alongside our sister communities, residents, and team members. We enjoyed a special prime rib dinner, cake 🎂, a heartfelt letter from our CEO, and plenty of memorable photos. Enjoy some of our favorite moments from the day!

Our wonderful residents and staff at Village Concepts of Burien had a fantastic time at Burien's Pride Celebration! 🌈 Led by Carl and Bruce, and dressed in bright colors, the group received cheers from the crowd. The event was a joyful and moving reminder that it's never too late to celebrate identity, love, and community. ❤️ We’re excited to continue this annual tradition for years to come!

🌼🌿 Our Gardening Club at Village Concepts of Burien has been extra busy! Each week, our residents have filled our garden with a variety of flowers—tulips, pansies, rhododendrons, marigolds, lilies, dahlias, peonies, geraniums, daffodils, and more! 🌷🌺🌻 On a sunny Friday, they also planted cherry tomatoes and bell peppers that they had nurtured indoors throughout the spring. We're looking forward to a summer harvest and some lovely blooms by July! And our strawberry patch 🍓 is on track to produce berries by June—stay tuned!

At Village Concepts of Burien, our team celebrated the vibrant culture of the Philippines in March! 🎉 Residents and staff enjoyed an immersive experience filled with delicious food, traditional clothing, and cultural activities. We are fortunate to have Filipino staff members who graciously shared their heritage with us. The month also included a field trip to a local Asian market, where residents explored Filipino cooking ingredients like calamansi limes, ube, banana leaves, and fish sauce. Our talented chef prepared a mouthwatering chicken adobo meal with pancit, which was a huge hit with the residents! Our Activities Director Daisha also collaborated with Filipino staff members to organize a traditional dress display, featuring the elegant "Baro't Saya," the national costume of the Philippines. Everyone is excited for the next cultural celebration!

At Village Concepts of Burien, we know our dining team is top-notch 🍽️- but now the entire community does too! 🎉 Our very own Dining Director, Nigel, recently took home the Best Soup Award 🏆 at the annual Empty Bowls event in Burien. Here's the fun part: he didn't even know we were participating! 😲 The day before the soup was due, a representative from Discover Burien arrived with a five-gallon bucket, ready to collect our entry. With no prior preparation, our talented chef got creative, using only ingredients available in our community kitchen. The result? A delicious Butternut Squash Soup 🍲 that wowed the crowd and earned us the top spot and a trophy 🏅 we will keep in our community for the next year! This award is a testament to the dedication and talent of our dining team 👏, proving that even when caught off guard, they rise to the occasion—deliciously! 😋 Congratulations to our Dining Services Director, Nigel, on this well-deserved recognition! 🎊 We can’t wait to see what he cooks up next year (with a little more notice this time 😉).

At Village Concepts of Burien, a heated 🎱 pool tournament unfolded between our residents: Bill "The Blade" Loetscher, Goldie Ann "Knuckles" Palmer, Gary "EZ Slice" Erickson, James "8 Ball" Bess, Kathy "The Curve" Fowler, and Bev "Nerves of Steel" Stone.

The game was played "round robin" style with an open ball concept. Each match was very intense, with everyone trying to sink the last ball on the table. 🍿 Beverages and popcorn flowed as the residents cheered each other on and encouraged the next player to keep their spirits up!

The first game ended with Bill making the last shot, and the second game ended with James connecting from the right corner. The final match was epic: Goldie and Bev starred in the last game as they combined to sink most of the balls on the table. Since they were playing round robin, everyone walked away a winner! 🏆

We hosted a delightful high tea at Concepts of Burien 🎄☕. Residents gathered in festive Santa hats to enjoy an afternoon of elegant tea and delicious pastries, including savory mushroom risotto bites and sweet mini cheesecakes. Bing Crosby holiday music filled the air as everyone shared stories and laughter — the perfect way to celebrate the season! 🎶✨

🎃👻 Check out some fun moments from Halloween at Village Concepts of Burien! 🎉 Our residents had a blast at the costume party, dancing the night away, and loved seeing our staff get into the Halloween spirit with their creative outfits. 🧙‍♀️🧛‍♂️ Some of us even dressed up as one of our amazing residents! 😄

Village Concepts of Burien celebrated our community with Spirit Week celebrations. "Crazy Hat," "Western Wear," and "American Pride" days were favorites and the festivities included themed happy hours, musical guests and conversations about where their outfits came from. While much of the week was lighthearted, deeper memories surfaced as well. Bill B. wore his service cap and shared stories about his time in the Navy and living in Alaska. Long treasured items were worn and shown off with pride and everyone is looking forward to next year!
