You may see D.O. after your provider’s name and wonder what it means. Here’s the scoop!
A Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) is a fully licensed physician. D.O.s attend four years of medical school, complete residency training, and are licensed to diagnose, treat, prescribe medications, and perform procedures in all 50 states.
🦴 What makes D.O.s unique?
They receive additional training in osteopathic principles, focusing on how the body’s systems work together and how structure and function are connected. This whole-person approach emphasizes preventive care, hands-on evaluation, and treating the root cause—not just symptoms.
✅ D.O.s can:
• Provide primary and specialty care
• Prescribe medications
• Order and interpret labs and imaging
• Perform procedures
